Songfacts®:

  • This song talks about a relationship that didn't work out, but in the beginning it was good: "You brought me into your heart and you swallow my pride." At some point, there were left unsaid: "I had a feeling you were hiding your thoughts," but it doesn't end well: "terrible realm... chained to the helm," and the devastation reveals itself. >>

  • Alan from Milton, VtThe song was actually inspired by Grant-Lee and his wife surveying the destruction of their home in California after it was destroyed in an Earthquake.
  • Mike182 from Pittsburgh, PaGreat song.....I just rediscovered it. Haunting in a way because you can tell he sold himself out to make the relationship work only to be crushed in the end. He's so emotionally battered and bruised, he's hoping the ground will open and swallow him.
