  • I really cant stay
    (But baby it's cold outside)
    Ive got to go away
    (But baby it's cold outside)
    This evening has been
(Been hopin' that you'd drop in)
    So very nice
(Ill hold your hands, they're just like ice)

My mother will start to worry
    (Beautiful, what's your hurry?)
And father will be pacing the floor
    (Listen to the fireplace roar)
    So really I'd better scurry
    (Beautiful, please don't hurry)
Well maybe just a half a drink more
(Put some records on while I pour)

    The neighbors might think
    (Baby, its bad out there)
    Say, what's in this drink?
(No cabs to be had out there)
    I wish I knew how
(Your eyes are like starlight now)
    To break this spell
(Ill take your hat, your hair looks swell)
I ought to say no, no, no, sir
(Mind if I move in closer)
At least Im gonna say that I tried
(Whats the sense of hurtin' my pride?)
    I really can't stay
    (Baby don't hold out)
    Ahh, but it's cold outside

    I simply must go
    (But baby, it's cold outside)
    The answer is no
    (But baby, it's cold outside)
    This welcome has been
(How lucky that you dropped in)
    So nice and warm
(Look out the window at that storm)

    My sister will be suspicious
    (Gosh your lips look delicious)
My brother will be there at the door
    (Waves upon a tropical shore)
My maiden aunt's mind is vicious
    (Ooh your lips are delicious)
Well maybe just a cigarette more
    (Never such a blizzard before)

    Ive got to get home
(But baby, you'll freeze out there)
    Say, lend me a coat
(Its up to your knees out there)
    You've really been grand
(I thrilled when you touched my hand)
    But don't you see
(How can you do this thing to me?)

There's bound to be talk tomorrow
(Think of my life long sorrow)
At least there will be plenty implied
(If you caught pneumonia and died)
    I really cant stay
    (Get over that old out)

    Ahhh, but it's cold outside

    John Legend/Kelly Clarkson version lyrics:

    I really can't stay
    (baby, it's cold outside)
    I've got to go away
(but, I can call you a ride)
    This evening has been
(I'm so glad you that you dropped in)
    So very nice
(time spent with you is paradise)
My mom will start to worry
(I'll call the car and tell him to hurry)
My daddy will be pacing the floor
(wait, what are you still livin' home for?)
    So, really, I'd better scurry
(your driver, his name is Murray)
But maybe just a half a drink more
(oh, we're both adults, so who's keepin' score)
    What will my friends think?
    (I think they should rejoice)
If I have one more drink?
(It's your body and your choice)
    Ooh you really know how
(your eyes are like starlight now)
    To cast a spell
(one look at you and then I fell)
I ought to say, "No, no, no, sir"
(then you really ought to go, go, go)
At least I'm gonna say that I tried
(well, Murray, he just pulled up outside)
    I really can't stay
    (I understand, baby)
    Baby, it's cold outside
    I simply should go
(text me when you get home)
Oh, I'm supposed to say no
    (mm, I guess that's respectable)
    This welcome has been
(I feel lucky that you dropped in)
    So nice and warm
(but you better go before it storms)
    My sister will be suspicious
(well, gosh your lips look delicious)
My brother will be there at the door
(oh, he loves my music, baby, I'm sure)
    My gossipy neighbor's vicious
(I'm a genie, tell me what your wish is)
But maybe just a cigarette more
(oh, that's somethin' we should probably explore)
    I've got to get home
    (oh, baby, I'm well aware)
    Say, lend me a coat
(oh, keep it girl, I don't care)
    You've really been grand
(I feel good to touch me hands)
    Don't you see?
(I want you to stay, it's not up to me)
There's bound to be talk tomorrow
(well, they can talk, what do they know)
At least there will be plenty implied
(oh, let their mind do this, and-)

    Ma'am, I really can't stay
    Baby, just go
    It's cold, baby
    It's cold, baby
But, ooh, I don't wanna go

  • Susan from Illinois She wants to leave his place.
    He wants her to stay.
We don’t know for sure how the night ends.
Did she call someone for a ride home or did she stay the night? And if she stayed the night, what happened? The song ends before these questions are answered.
  • Charlie from Miami, FloridaThis song is not about rape. George from Vancouver, Canada is incorrect. "He puts something in her drink; he ignores her saying "no" over & over. . ." What the woman means by that is that she isn't sure why she wants to stay. She's playing hard to get and giving reasons why she shouldn't stay. It's a cute song if you actually read between the lines.
  • Susan from Atlanta, GeorgiaIf you haven't heard the version done by Rod Stewart and Dolly Parton, you should give it a listen. One of my favorite songs ever. I have to laugh at the rape comments. It's clearly a seduction song, and she is in control enough to say no or choose NOT to say no.
  • George from Vancouver, CanadaRapiest Xmas song ever.

He puts something in her drink; he ignores her saying "no" over & over. . .
  • Dave from Philadelphia, PaMarc from Tucson - don't be a dope! The song is a playful tune about seduction, not rape!
  • Scott from Bothell, WaThis is one of my favorite Christmas season songs. I have to roll my eyes at the "rape" comment. That said, the idea of a man seducing a women (who is not resisting much) is there not just in the lyrics but in the sheet music where the male part is labeled as "Wolf" and the female part is "Mouse".
  • David from Liverpool, United KingdomThe Tom Jones/Cerys version is, to me, deeply sinister and unsettling. Tom sounds his age and Cery's always sounded to me like she has 'learning difficulties'. A disturbing and unpleasant experience.
  • Marc from Tucson, AzIf you listen to the lyrics, I'm pretty sure that it's clear this songs is really about a man refusing to let a woman leave, because he wants to rape her.
  • Jennifer Harris from Grand Blanc, MiI love this song, and Neptune's Daughter is a good movie!
  • Jessie from Dallas, TxI love this song
  • Kate from Poughkeepsie, NyJessica Simpson and Nick Lachey recorded a version of this song for Jessica's Christmas album: Rejoyce: The Christmas Album (released in 2004). Also Martina McBride recorded a version of this song with Dean Martin for her Christmas album: White Christmas (re-released 2007).
