Artistfacts for Avril Lavigne

  • She grew up in the small town of Napanee, Ontario, Canada. Her name is pronounced AH-vreel la-VEEN. It's French.
  • Avril has been performing live for years. She began with county fairs singing country songs and gospel at church. She learned guitar from listening to "Fly Away" by Lenny Kravitz. She was signed to a record label (Arista) at age 16, and claims she never experiences stage fright.
  • She consistently refuses to conform to other people's ideas of how to be popular. She won't sing songs by other songwriters or have her teeth bleached. Onstage, she will only wear her own outfits, which usually include tank tops and neckties.
  • With the help of producer Clif Magness, she wrote many of the songs on her debut album . Before that, she was living in New York, experiencing writer's block. Lavigne says that she and Magness clicked instantly.
  • What is "avril"? It is the month of April in French. It also stands for "A Virtual Reality Interface Library," a program meant to help computer programmers with creating virtual worlds. Other 'Avrils' include Avril Mawhinney, a portrait photographer; Avril Rowlands, who runs courses for those interested in film and television; Avril Fahey, one of the best female cricketers in the world; and Christopher Avril, a French jazz musician.
  • Favorite Lavigne sports include, skateboarding, hockey, and baseball. She once got in a fight with the goalie playing hockey.
  • Avril used to write as soon as she got home because she was always grounded. She calls herself an "old soul" and is a big believer in sticking to your principles and standing up for yourself.
  • Lavigne: "I don't like people putting their lyrics into my songs. I want them to be my lyrics." (thanks, Jen - Philadelphia, PA, for above 2)
  • Avril has a way of setting fashion trends. When she wore ties with her outfits, so did many of her fans. On her first Saturday Night Live appearance, she wore a T-shirt for Home Hardware in her hometown of Napanee, and the store sold thousands of them.
  • Avril and Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley tied the knot on July 15 2006 in Montecito, California. They had been engaged since summer 2005. The marriage lasted a little more than three years and Lavigne filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences on October 9, 2009. Despite their personal difficulties, the pair remained friends and Whibley produced eight of the tracks on Lavigne's 2011 album, Goodbye Lullaby. (thanks, Matthew - Fleetwood, England)
  • She spent a year in France after her divorce from Deryck Whibley to honor a vow she'd made to learn French. "I have my French passport and my dad is from France, but I'm also a French Canadian, so I really wanted to learn French," Avril explained.
"I was single for the first time and I sold my house in L.A., and I'd just finished my world tour and I was like, 'I think I'm going to go to France,'" she continued. "I went all by myself, I didn't know anyone and I got an apartment and I did school with Berlitz, five days a week, six hours a day."
  • Avril married Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger on July 1, 2013 (Canada day). They tied the knot in front of approximately 50 guests at Chateau La Napoule in Mandelieu, France, which is located near Cannes.

Hi my name's Chantal, I love a lot of bands and song artists from over seas and from South Africa, but I think its ridiculous how everyone's debating over a site of good commentary.Chantal - Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa
Lilly you dont know what your talking about either , Avril is mixed with rock and pop.Steve - S Richmond Hill, Ny
I grew up in the late 70s and 80s and I love Avril Lavigne and I dont care who knows. So who ever said that who ever listens to her hasnt discovered Classic Rock yet dont know what theyre talking about because plenty of her fans can be in their late 20s to even 40s. Yeah i grew up with bands like the CARS( My favorite) ,Kiss, Guns N Roses and Motley Crue , the Police, but I also liked Madonna and alot of early 80s pop. Avril Lavigne is mixed with pop and rock thoughSteve - S Richmond Hill, Ny
Really? Avril Lavigne never called herself punk, it's a false label that a magazine gave her that she never spoke about. I personally consider her a mix between alternative rock and pop. Just because she's a female doesn't mean it is impossible for her to have a guitar sound, guys. She sounds much better acoustic, yes even performing instruments, than anything else. I enjoy her songs, most particularly ones that express her voice like "Losing Grip", "Together", "Nobody's Home", and "Runaway". Just because she grew up in a subtle environment, people think she's a poser. The truth is, she's just a singer who wants to write songs teenagers can relate to and, well, sing. If you don't agree with that, then look up artists you do like and stay off pages that you don't!Tabitha - Lake Havasu City, Az
First of all most of you have no idea what punk really is!The Misfits, Jack Off Jill, The Dstillers, Oxymoron, and Rancid are punk! Aril is just some stupid poser who is wearing sheeps clothing. She acts lke a badass thinking that flipping people off and spitting at the paparazzi is "HARD CORE". But if she wants to know what "HARD CORE" really is she should google Jack Off JILL and pack it in.Linda - Stow, Ma
I think girlfriend is a terrible song but she has some great songs in that album. When You're Gone and Keep Holding On are great ballads. Hot is a very sexy song.Reynard Jusuf - Jakarta,
hay ur music rocks!!!!!!!!! check my myspace:)Devon - Pittsburgh, United States
I think avril lavigne is really hot and she has great music. I would really like to meet her. some songs she sing are really weird but ok:) lol i am 16 and i hope to meet u some dayDevon - Pittsburgh, United States
What the hell happened to her?! She had a vague and blurry chance for musical respect in the beginning, but ever since "Girlfriend" was released...Oh God. If that comes on again...OH GOD...Shelby - The Dark Side
Thank you Tom. I agree. I'm not a huge fan of Avril's but, at least she's mor talented than Britney. She doesn't really seem to be a great guitarist, but she writes her own stuff. At least she people something more to aspire towards. I'm a biggger fan of people like Jimi Hendricks, Led Zep0pelin, the Beatles, Jonie Mitchell, Bonnie rate, and the like. Those of you who are huge fans of Avri;. please don't bash those of us who aren't. We all have our opinions. O and one more thing, I believe calling the Sex Pistols "pop" or "pop punk" is blasphemy. Just because they were an auditioned group, and every idea was thought up by Malcolm McClaren, it doesn't mean they weren't punk. They embodied the attitude, and their songs were punk songs. I don't consider avril punk. Heck, she doesn't consider herself punk, but those are just opinions.Stefanie - Rock Hill, Sc
i don't like what you said about avril she has a beautiful voice all her songs are brilliant and she is great at playing the guitar.Emma - Telford, Ut
Alright Tom, Trowbridge, England and the rest of you little boys. Not everyone can be Jewell or Ashlee, (thank GOD). Avril has tremendous talent as a lyricist. As she grows up we're going to hear some great songs from her. Quit being so threatened by the girls . . . and I am in my fifth decade.Lalah - Wasilla, Ak
I think Avril Lavigne puts on pretty good concerts. She jumps around and has fun with it instead of just standing there like "yep, I'm a singer, worship me now kthanks" as some do... Yes, she HAS said that she isn't punk, or "angry" or anything the media has called her, if you've ever watched her interviews... Speaking of which she sounds like an incredible person in her interviews =)
Just my opinion
Your Mom - Your Dad, Canada
i dont think there is such a thing as punk pop as the definition of it states that it is unpopular, so calling it pop punk is a contridiction in terms. the sex pistols were punk although they were more posers, i still think they were a great band though and far better than avril but im not bothered if you disagree you're entitled to your own opinion!Beckz - Northampton, England
avril lavigne can play the guitar and she rocks! avril rocks! her whole band rocks.Paige - Plainfeild, Il
Avril Lavigne is no punk. Sid Vicious was a punk.Danny - Sydney, Australia
yeah beatles and led zeppelin definitely rule! (and pink floyd...) and i wouldn't say that reminding anyone of alanis is necesarily a compliment... anyone who listens to avril lavigne either hasn't discovered classic rock yet or just doesn't understand music! i think i'd respect someone more for listening to ANY kind of music other than avril lavigne type music. come on, just TRY to get into another type of music people! It might be painful at first but you'll love yourself for it when you're not forced to listen to avril.Jeanette - Irvine, Ca
i saw avril lavigne live she is a great inspiration to girls everywhere t ojust believe in there selves and just being there selves any one who does not get the messege is a pathetic loser poser whatever you wanna call it and by the way avril is not a poser because she is more punk then u will ever be and if u wanna make fun of her just remember shes the one with the record label contract and performing on stage not you!Jessica - Hamilton, Canada
I don't like Avril Lavigne. I used to. I don't anymore.
I bought a dvd of her live. She didn't play guitar, her singing sucked, and she was a crappy show-person. Terrible.
Her music is annoying too.
I play the guitar and in her complicated video she played the chord "G" the whole time.
She badmouths every other celebrity.
She has a song called "skater boi" (wtf???)
Her music is not punk. Its pop. Get over it.
She wouldn't know ONE of the Ramones or Sex Pistols songs even though she claims to be punk (She does. She labeled herself "Punk Princess" Ugh)
Her old manager reckons she sucks.
She treats her fans pretty crappy.

Ok, so you might call me an Avril basher. But i have reasons (read above) and i did USED to like her. So it's not as though i started off an Avril basher. I know she's young, but if she's in the public eye she needs to have more respect for other celebrites and her fans, she needs to be more mature. Yeah, but in general, i hate her music. Even if its "her own style" I still hate it.

(sorry those who like avril if i offended you)
Caitlin - Canberra, Australia
Hey what's with all the avril-bashing? i personally am a huge fan, i know she's not the most talented artist around, but she never claimed she was punk or whatever, and hey i think she's cool, she's just a kid trying to grow up too, and she's got it doubly as hard because she's doing it in the public eye, give her a break, she made it didn't she...?Taylor Paige - Sydney, Australia
The music industry now is way to commercialised, and all those bands that aren't aren't commercialised because they suck. exceptions to minority.

Avril Lavigne definately haas more kudos from me than slutty 'virgins' like B. Spears, urghhh
- its ur perogative to shut up!

at least avril lavigne has some musical sense. She writes her own lyrics, plays some form of instrument (albeit only a gimmicky bit) and is not caught up in marrying and divorcing every second person within 48 hours like some. Personally, i find a lot of her stuff quite crap, but at least she has some musical sense.

also, i rekon the punk genre has changed like grunge. Theres a 'popular' punk movement, which bannds/artists are made into an acceptable image so parents will buy the albulm for kids. Its punk but very lame punk. let the people learn. I started by liking linkin park, slowly after murder to behind blue eyes, i realised the talentlessness of music now.
Rae - Sydney, Australia
Wow, I think I lost my last dwindelling shred of respect for the music industry when they started calling Avril Lavigne and Blink 182 punk sigh...Ian - Hamilton, Canada
i find it funny that some one as trendy as avril says she's trying to be differrent. One of my friends went as far as to call her alt rock! This kid also doesn't know the difference between rock and pop so it shows how smart most of her fans are. Well I hope my rantings make some impact.Ian - New York, Ny
Avril Lavigne says: "I wouldn't want to be normal, or else my life would be to boring."Caitlin - Wilsonville, Or
I can't understand girls trying to be as she is... They dress like Avril, their hair looks like Avril's, their music is Avril's music.. Please wake up!! Her songs are nice to heard... but be realistic: they are all except punk-rock!Mara - Bergamo, Italy
what do jelly bracelets have to do with anything?! Gosh...Well about Avril, she has barely any talent. She could be worse, at least she TRIES to play guitar and she does it while she sings, but she's not that great...Anyone who goes around calling themselves a "rock chick" or "punk" as a human is a total disgrace to everyone. If they say they're a "rock chick" as a musician, well, that's another thing. But it's not a matter of believing what she says. It's a matter of the type of music she makes, which is pop, not rock. And she doesn't live the rock n' roll lifestyle. If somebody lived the true 'rock n'roll' lifestyle just because they wanted to be a true rock and roll artist and they tried way to hard to get a true rock sound... well they failed. But if you live that way and make that kind of music, just because it's what you truly love and sex and drugs and rock n'roll is your idea of fun...well you just don't find those kinds of musicians anymore...Avril is too naive and too much of a good girl to do anything that a
"real" "rock chick".
Grace - Liverpool, United States
she does not know how to play the guitar, literally. she does not know a note on the guitar, which is odd because i dont know how she writes her music downJosh - Idontknow, Fl
I find it funny that people say that Avril is an artist. Sorry all of the people who believe that if you are famous it makes you a good artist. I'm shocked by some of what is said. The people who are saying that her music is real should wake and look at the song facts. She doens't write her stuff. No I'm not being jealous because i have no intention to write pop. And to those who believe sher is an idol and a role model, go outside and see what the real world is, just don't grow up to be someone who can't even look back to see where she came from.Ian - New York, Ny
I went to Avri's concert, there she played songs from both CD's. She also played the guitar, drums and piano. she has a beautiful voice and is one of her own. she doesnt care what people think and neither do i, and as an aspiring artist i look up to her. anyone to think she sucks must be crazy cuz she is a tomboy that doesnt care what you say. she even takes her own clothes to photo shoots so if you think she's a slut then i cant imagine what you call britney spears!Emma - Columbus, Oh
"Sex Pistols while claiming to be punk-rock, very stupid!" Sex Pistols are NOT punk, lol. They had their lyrics written for them, Sid was only in the band to fit their image (he was never recorded in the studio and he was unplugged at most concerts), they were more pop, punk-pop at most, NOT punk. "anyone that thinks she's not a punk rock chick, is just jealous that they aren't as good and famous as her." Here is a question, Chelsi (or anyone else) - how the hell can you be punk-rock if you are famous? And as good as her, I could play guitar with my feet better than her! And I play drums (and some bass guitar)!Matt - Houston, Tx
I love Avril! Two of my best friends went to her concert October 27 and said she rocks! (I agree) One of my friends that went met her after the concert and she said that she is so down-to-earth. She had a floor seat and she was as close to the stage as she could get and she heard her playing the guitar. And anyone that thinks she's not a punk rock chick, is just jealous that they aren't as good and famous as her. If you think Avril rocks, you rock! She sticks up for herself and that's what ever good person does. If you think she's a fake, you must be a fake for noticing!Chelsi - Mandeville, La
Funny how everyone on this page who's a fan of Avril Lavigne is a girl! Call me sexist if you like but it seems to me that a lot of girls like artists more for their image than their music; it explains why more girls than boys like Bon Jovi.Tom - Trowbridge, England
Avril Lavigne gets way too much bad press. She's no Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks or Bonnie Raitt but she's miles better than Britney, Christina et al. The problem lies with the record companies. They see a teenage girl and come to the conclusion that she can be little more than pop and her sole purpose is to earn lots of money for them. That's what's wrong with the music industry today; everyone's just out to make a bit of cash and I think it's disgusting! I'm not particularly a fan of Avril's (she is quite fit though!)but she does have some talent. If her record company would only give her a bit more creative freedom then she could show us what she is truly capable of. I've no doubt that she wants to be taken seriously so we should try and respect that.Tom - Trowbridge, England
Avril misprounounced David Bowies name while presenting him an award...unacceptable! Not knowing the Sex Pistols while claiming to be punk-rock, very stupid! She also has a crush on pro skater Tony Trujillo, and while happening to stay in the same hotel as him, sent cronies to ask him if he wanted to come down and "meet" her. Tony's reply "No way...that chick is stupid!"Josh - Hauula, Hi
as best put by mad magazine in their
fifty-two most unwanted americans edition
"a punk ass rebel all the way!,
at least thats what shes told to say"
(she is canadian, but we don't want her
either!
Matt - Toronto, Canada
She doesn't know how to play the guitar. Watch the 2004 Juno awards. She doesn't.

The Sex Pistols= punk
The Distillers= punk
Marilyn Manson= Goth
Jack Off Jill= Goth
Avril= pop.

Get over it, ppl. Avril was gonna sing country (and if she did ALOT of subcultures wouldn't have been destroyed), but her record company told her it wouldn't sell.
Lilly - Waterloo, Canada
Avril reminds me in a pleasant way of Alanis. She has soul and character. She loves the music, not the commercialism.Kenneth - New York, Ny
