Chris Brown

Chris Brown Artistfacts

  • May 5, 1989
  • He's from Tappahannock, a little town in Virginia where he grew up singing in church. He thought about being a rapper until his mom told him how good his singing was.
  • Brown was just 15 when he signed a record deal with Jive in 2005. He's one of the last major stars discovered before the age of YouTube and social media - he had to venture into New York City to showcase his talents.
  • His hobbies and interests include basketball, martial arts, tattoos and comic books.
  • He broke into acting in 2007 when he appeared on three episodes of the TV series The O.C. playing a band geek who likes a girl who is very social. That same year, he was also in the movie Stomp The Yard.
  • He famously assaulted Rihanna, whom he was dating at the time, the night before the Grammy Awards in 2009. She was riding in his rented Lamborghini when he attacked her, choking her nearly unconscious and leaving her in the street. Brown was ordered to stay 100 feet away from her at all times, a restriction that was eased by a judge in February, 2011.
  • Brown was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2014 and has been through various treatment programs to help control his violent outbursts.
  • He loves art. "I use music or painting as my outlet to get through the confusion," Chris explained to XXL magazine.
  • Chris Brown got his first tattoo when he was 13 - an inking of Jesus with some music notes signifying that the Son of God gave him the gift to sing. Breezy recalled to Giant magazine: "On my 13th birthday I was like, 'Mom, I want a tattoo.' She's like, (high pitched voice) 'You ain't gettin' no tattoo!' So I went against her will and got one but I told her it was positive so then she liked it."
  • His influences include Sam Cook, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Usher, Kim Burrell, Donnie Hathaway and Marvin Gaye.
  • He's been charged with a number of violent crimes, including a 2013 incident when he allegedly punched Frank Ocean, but one of his more bizarre run-ins with the law came in 2018 when he got in trouble for owning a capuchin monkey without a permit.
