Artistfacts for Refused

  • The title of Refused's seminal 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come is a play on the title of Ornette Coleman's 1959 fusion jazz album The Shape of Jazz to Come. The title for the Refused song "Refused Are F--kin' Dead" is also a play on an already existing song, Born Against's "Born Against Are F--kin' Dead."
  • Metal magazine Kerrang! placed Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come at #13 on their list of the 50 Most Influential Albums of All Time in 2003.
  • The breakdown in Refused's song "New Noise" samples Col. Kurtz's monologue from the 1979 Francis Ford Coppola movie Apocalypse Now. Another Refused song that features a sample is "Deadly Rhythm," which borrowed parts from Bo Diddley's 1959 song "I'm A Man."
  • When playing live, The Used often incorporates a section of Refused's "New Noise" into their song "Maybe Memories." A live version of the track can be found on The Used's 2007 live disc Berth which was recorded in Vancouver, BC Canada.
  • Refused broke up in 1998 over creative and emotional differences. The band called their final US tour "an awful experience" and decided to cancel several dates due to exhaustion. Refused's last show before splitting up was at a friend's house in Harrisonburg, Virginia, but the gig was shut down by police.
  • After Refused broke up in 1998, lead singer Dennis Lyxzén started a new band called The (International) Noise Conspiracy. Some of that bands first shows were in illegal bars and clubs in China, where police waited outside with guns and nightsticks to arrest people leaving the venues.
  • Refused guitarist Kristofer Steen is also a film director. He directed the 2006 documentary Refused Are F--king Dead, which chronicled the band's downfall and eventual demise in 1998. Steen says that two of his biggest film influences are documentary director Errol Morris and visionary filmmaker Terrence Malick.
  • Refused frontman Dennis Lyxzén is a vegan. Lyxzén says his family was poor growing up so he ate whatever he was given. He decided to become a vegan before he could appreciate it and says "I don't take food for granted. I like the challenge of being a vegan."
