Behind The Lyrics of “Wildest Dreams” by Taylor Swift

In 2014, Taylor Swift famously recalibrated her sound, transitioning from country to pop. It was a bold move, and a successful one ultimately. To mark this, she named her album 1989, after her birth year. It was symbolic, as her career would see a rebirth. 1989 proved to be a successful move as the album peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spawned seven hit singles. Among those, the album’s fifth single, “Wildest Dreams,” peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Beginning in 2021, Taylor Swift re-recorded her iconic albums to obtain the rights to her own catalog. With this, she re-recorded her 1989 album, which was released on October 27, 2023, titled 1989 (Taylor’s Version).

Swift wrote the song with executive producer Max Martin and his frequent collaborator, Shellback. It’s a ballad about telling a lover to remember them after the brief relationship ends. The narrator, Swift, is still in love with the man throughout the song but predicts their love will end. Lyrically, this track could’ve easily fit into Swift’s country era. The song opens with an offering by the lover to get away. She knows this won’t be a romance that lasts, but remains invested due to feelings of lust. She knows where this will lead, though.

He said, “Let’s get out of this town
Drive out of this city, away from the crowds”
I thought, “Heaven can’t help me now”
Nothing lasts forever
But this is gonna take me down

He’s so tall and handsome as hell
He’s so bad, but he does it so well
I can see the end as it begins
My one condition is

“Say You’ll Remember Me”

The song’s chorus starts with the line that sums up the entire song. It’s simple and to the point. Swift doesn’t beat around the bush with the context here. She is directly asking the lover to remember her beyond the relationship.

“Say you’ll remember me / Standin’ in a nice dress, starin’ at the sunset, babe. / Red lips and rosy cheeks / Say you’ll see me again, even if it’s just in your wildest dreams.”

“You’ll see me in hindsight / Tangled up with you all night, burnin’ it down / Someday, when you leave me, I bet these memories follow you around”

It has been heavily speculated that “Wildest Dreams” is about actor Alexander Skarsgard. Swift and Skarsgard both starred in the 2014 dystopian film The Giver. Fans have made connections between Swift sporting dark hair in the music video, just like she did in the film. Additionally, the video’s locations are set in Africa, where the movie was filmed. The physical descriptions of the song fit the actor as well. Throughout the years, Skarsgard has neither confirmed nor denied the theory, leading to further speculation by fans.
