The Dark Side of “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish

“Birds of a Feather” was the second single from Billie Eilish’s third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, released in 2024. It peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard charts and blew up on TikTok, and it was also Spotify’s most-streamed song that year.

She wrote the song with her brother, Finneas, her frequent collaborator and producer, and they spent nearly a year working on it. Although it became one of her biggest hits, she nearly scrapped it from the album.

The song’s video shows Billie being dragged through an empty office building by an invisible force.

“Birds of a Feather” and Lifelong Love

“Birds of a Feather” is about a deep, unending love, but with a bit of a twist.

“There’s a lot of songs about dying for somebody and loving them till they die, and I thought it was really fun to reverse it,” Finneas explained.

The first verse expresses how much the singer loves their significant other, using dark imagery relating to death to make their point. They want to stay together until they die, whether that’s decades from now or the next day. They also don’t want to live a single day without them—they don’t want to be saved from death because their life means nothing without the person they love.

“I wanted it to feel, like, toxic and a little bit, like, love bomb-y,” Billie said.

The title and chorus are based on the idiom “birds of a feather flock together.” Billie uses it to suggest the two of them belong together until the very end.

“We wrote about the idea that you’re going to die soon, and let’s make it last,” she said.

Birds of a feather, we should stick together, I know
I said I’d never think I wasn’t better alone
Can’t change the weather, might not be forever
But if it’s forever, it’s even better
And I don’t know what I’m cryin’ for
I don’t think I could love you more
It might not be long, but baby, I
I’ll love you ’til the day that I die

In the second verse, Billie sings about wanting the person she’s in love with to see themselves the way she sees them, highlighting what it is that makes her love them.

I want you to see, hm
How you look to me, hm
You wouldn’t believe if I told ya
You would keep the compliments I throw ya
But you’re so full of shit, uh
Tell me it’s a bit, oh
Say you don’t see it, your mind’s polluted
Say you wanna quit, don’t be stupid

Despite Billie’s inspiration and explanations, she also wants listeners to interpret the song however they see fit.

“With music, my whole thing is that it’s for the listener to decide what it means,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what I wrote it about, what Finneas wrote it about, it really doesn’t matter, as long as you interpret however you need to.”
