In 2025, Olivia Dean earned a No. 1 album in the UK, her homeland. The Art Of Loving topped the UK Albums chart and peaked at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200. “Nice To Each Other” was the lead single from the album, released on May 30, 2025. It set the success of the album in motion, peaking at No. 4 on the UK singles chart.
“Nice To Each Other” is about a “situationship,” which is a relationship that doesn’t follow traditional standards. The context of the “situationship” represents modern dating where labels aren’t defined. There’s a significant amount of push and pull throughout the song, just like the relationship. Additionally, the song is about independence and free thinking.
Here we are, back again / Fightin’ what’s in front of me
There’s so much to unpack again / But if I come to Italy.
We could be nice to each other / Nice to each other
Wrong for each other, right for each other / And rise to each other
Rise to each other.
The two could be nice to each other and not necessarily right for each other. They could spend time together without overthinking the situation.
Exploring Independence
In a statement through The Line Of Best Fit, Olivia Dean spoke on the meaning of the song. “‘Nice To Each Other’ is about the push and pull of exploring your independence in dating. It’s about enjoying someone in the present and allowing it to be both light and meaningful. I think this song and video represent playfulness in me that I’m excited for people to see.”
‘Cause, you know, I’ve done all the classic stuff
And it never works, you know it
So can we say we’ll never say the classic stuff?
To show it
Now and know it.
She’s in a place in her life where she’s open to spending time together without the pressure of the “classic stuff.” Just because you’re not ready for the classic relationship doesn’t mean it’s wrong to have fun together. It’s become a “situationship” anthem, as the dating style has become more common in modern society.
