The Meaning Behind “Beaches In Tennessee” by Cage The Elephant and the Hospital Stay That Led to the New Single

For the first time since 2024, Cage The Elephant has released new music. On July 10, 2026, a new single, “Beaches In Tennessee”, was released. Additionally, it’s the band’s debut release under their new label, Big Loud Rock. The new single is a metaphorical track about lead singer Matt Shultz’s two-month stay in a psychiatric hospital in 2023. Shultz was arrested at New York’s Bowery Hotel in possession of two firearms. What looked like the darkest time of Shultz’s life turned into a life-saving incident.

Following hospitalization and six months of outpatient treatment, Shultz snapped out of years-long medication-induced psychosis. He soon found clarity and reflects on the incident as a “miracle.” Shultz told Rolling Stone in 2024, “It’s a miracle that I’m here today. I was arrested last year, and it undoubtedly saved my life. After my arrest, I went to the hospital for two months, followed by months of outpatient treatment.” Shultz went on to explain how he fell into psychosis from his ADHD medication and thanked his wife and bandmates for sticking with him through that time. Shultz has made a full recovery and went on to say, “I thank God I was able to come out on the other side.”

The new single, “Beaches In Tennessee”, details the psychiatric hospitalization experience.

They won’t let us keep the laces in our shoes
They say it’s voluntary, but they won’t let us choose
Looking through the glass, all that I can see
Reflection of the man who threw away the key

“Somebody Take Me Home”

The experience restored Shultz’s faith in God, and he references praying. He’s also thinking about what the magazines must be saying about him, knowing he’s a celebrity.

I’m on my hands and knees
Who’s gonna come for me?
Tell all the magazines
I’m a celebrity
They got their eyes on me
I’ll never let ’em see
40 to life, I’ll be
Dead by the time I leave
.

Shultz just wants to return home to Tennessee. The word “beaches” is metaphorical for paradise. His paradise is returning home after his release from the hospital. After years of psychosis, this return home will feel like the first in years.

Somebody take me home / They’re trying to bury me
I’m going back to those / Beaches in Tennessee
Somebody take me home / I’m not the enemy
I’m going back to those / Beaches in Tennessee
.
