The two remaining members of The Beatles have collaborated once more. Paul McCartney released his twentieth solo album on May 29, 2026. The Boys Of Dungeon Lane is a reflective album for McCartney, compiling memories into stripped-down songs with little to no effects. It feels more personal than previous solo releases from McCartney. He brought along Ringo Starr to collaborate on “Home To Us”. In recent years, Starr has ventured back into country music for the first time since 1970. He released two back-to-back country albums, Look Up in 2025 and Long Long Road in 2026.
On the heels of Ringo Starr’s shift back into country, his collaboration with McCartney shares elements of this. “Home To Us” is a nostalgic reflection song based on a shared experience between the two. They had both grown up in working-class families in postwar Liverpool. Though their upbringing was rough, they look back fondly on how this shaped their success. Where they came from is their true home, before everyone else knew them as the biggest band in the world. The song was also about the late great Beatles bandmate, George Harrison, who also grew up in the same conditions.
The place we used to live in, you could say it wasn’t much
But it was home to us
And you could be forgiven if you thought that it was rough
But it was home to us
The roses in the yard began to wilt and then they turned to dust
But it was home to us.
Paul McCartney Held a Listening Party at Abbey Road Studios
During a listening party for The Boys Of Dungeon Lane, McCartney told the crowd, “The three of us were raised in quite poor conditions. Even though where we lived was [a] little rough, it was home to us.” Ringo Starr’s childhood neighborhood, the Dingle, is referenced due to his bad reputation. To this, McCartney noted, “Ringo was from the Dingle, and that was well hard. He said he used to get mugged coming home because he worked.”
Many have noted that “Home To Us” is similar to Penny Lane, describing the neighborhoods and people there as if you’re passing through. It’s an endearing track from former bandmates who can reminisce together, sharing experiences from before their fame that only the two of them truly understand.
The lady on the hill was drinking brandy
Eating caviar, the perfect host
My mom was in the kitchen washing dishes in the sink
And then she burned the toast
The kids are in the alley playing Molotov ’til the sun goes down
But that was my hometown, and it was home to us.
