The Rebellious Meaning Behind “Can’t Stand Still” by Margo Price

On July 3, 2026, modern outlaw country star Margo Price released a surprise album. The following day, she performed at Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July Picnic. She has become closely acquainted with Nelson, along with other outlaw country legends. This has led to her joining the Board of Directors for Farm Aid, an annual festival co-founded by Willie Nelson to raise money to support farmers in the US.

Her new album, Days Of Unrest, contains covers of protest songs along with a few original tracks sprinkled in. Among those originals is “Can’t Stand Still,” which feels like a continuation of her previous album, Hard Headed Woman. It’s the kind of upbeat anthem that fans adore from Margo. The song details her rebellious nature and rambling spirit. She touches on feminism in the opening verse and later hints at struggles along the way.

Well, women ain’t supposed to ramble
Women ain’t supposed to think
Why would I wanna stay home all night
Washin’ dishes in the kitchen sink?

And it’s been a lowdown time
It’s been an uphill climb
.

“And Now I Can’t Stand Still / No, I Never Will”

The song begins to detail perseverance through fame, determined to continue traveling. She reflects and decides there’s advice she could pass along to her younger sibling. Despite substance abuse issues along the way, she can’t stand still and keeps pushing.

I got to tell my littlе sister
Not to do the way I do
‘Cause thе pills won’t help take away the pain
Like the whiskey and the cocaine do
.

Notably, Margo Price has been sober since 2020. On quitting drinking alcohol, she told GQ in 2021, it was “the most rebellious thing I’ve ever done.” She still carries her outlaw country spirit, now adjusted with a clearer mind.

Her new album featured covers by artists such as Blaze Foley, Woody Guthrie, Charlie Daniels, and Bob Dylan. With the recent success of Price’s 2025 album, her newest release is expected to chart well. Hard Headed Woman peaked at No. 1 on the UK Country Albums chart and No. 37 on the Billboard US Top Album Sales chart. Price is currently on her Wild At Heart Tour, running into September 2026.
