We may be living in the streaming era, but physical media remains popular\u2014and profitable. Vinyl sales have surpassed $1 billion for the first time since 1983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Year-End Recorded Music Revenue Report<\/a> by the Recording Industry of America, vinyl sales hit $1.04 billion with nearly 47 million copies in the United States in 2025, up 9.3% from the previous year. The report does not include sales of pre-owned vinyl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Fans are consuming music from the artists they love in more ways than ever, and that passion is reflected in today’s report,” RIAA vice president of research Matt Bass said in a press release. “2025 reveals a strong and stable music economy resulting from committed label investment and identification of new spaces to expand artists’ creativity. From the ease of streaming to new vinyl to licensing responsible AI tools and services, labels are diversifying fan engagement.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CEO Mitch Glazier highlighted the larger impact music revenue has on the economy, saying, “Through it all, music remains a cornerstone of culture and a growing economic powerhouse for the U.S., contributing $212 billion to our GDP and supporting more than 2.5 million American jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those numbers got a boost from Taylor Swift<\/a>, whose new album, The Life of a Showgirl<\/em>, sold 1.6 million copies on vinyl and was available in 11 different variants. Swift was by far the top-selling artist on vinyl for the year\u2014Sabrina Carpenter came in at No. 2 in the top 10 with 292,000 copies of Man’s Best Friend<\/em> sold, followed by Kendrick Lamar’s GNX<\/em>, with 272,000 copies sold. The top 10 didn’t just include new releases, however. Classic albums like Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours<\/em> and Michael Jackson’s Thriller<\/em> also made the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite being considered a dying medium, vinyl remains popular, and sales have been increasing annually for the last 19 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report also indicated that the music industry overall had record-breaking revenue of $11.5 billion, and streaming hit a new record of $9.5 billion in revenue, making up 80% of revenue overall. CDs sold 29.5 million units, with $312.4 million in revenue, down from 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
