And while some lost albums will tragically probably never see the light of day, others have made their way out into the world decades later, although not necessarily quite as they were intended to be heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Beach Boys &#8211; &#8216;Smile&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Beach Boys - SMiLE - 1967\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gTt6fO1viY0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After the success of <em>Pet Sounds<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/songs\/the-beach-boys\">The Beach Boys<\/a> intended to follow it up with <em>Smile<\/em> and began recording it in 1966. Brian Wilson imagined it to be his best work, but it was never finished. It was eventually released in 2011\u2014albeit not totally finished\u2014as <em>The Smile Sessions<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David Bowie &#8211; &#8216;Toy&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I Dig Everything\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/haBMgbMQFZo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2000, David Bowie began recording <em>Toy<\/em>, which featured new versions of some of his older songs originally recorded between 1964 and 1971. <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/music\/news\/david-bowie-lost-album-toy-inside-story-1235148692\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">He intended to release it in 2001<\/a>, but his label at the time, EMI\/Virgin, delayed it indefinitely. It was eventually released in 2021, five years after Bowie\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prince &#8211; &#8216;The Black Album&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"le grind - Prince Black Album\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/clFgdVuh-1Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Prince\u2019s <em>Black Album<\/em> was all set for release in late 1987\u2014promotional copies had already been pressed and sent when the singer changed his mind just a week before the release date. The album was pulled and all copies were destroyed. Seven years later, in November 1994, it got a limited release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neil Young &#8211; &#8216;Chrome Dreams&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Neil Young \u2013 Pocahontas (Official Audio)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U1UZkBpsAOo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Neil Young put <em>Chrome Dreams<\/em> together in 1977 with songs he\u2019d recorded in the previous two years, and despite being pressed on acetate, he ultimately shelved it. Although he released a sequel, <em>Chrome Dreams II<\/em>, in 2007, the original album wasn\u2019t released until 2023, as one of many archival releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bruce Springsteen &#8211; &#8216;The Lost Albums&#8217; and &#8216;Electric Nebraska&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (Electric Nebraska - Official Audio)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ULcRPp4KGNw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In his bedroom in 1982, Bruce Springsteen recorded what he intended to be demos of songs that would eventually have the backing of his E Street Band. Although he changed his mind, he did release electric versions of the songs in 2025, as <em>Electric Nebraska<\/em>. He also released numerous previously unreleased albums in the box set <em>Tracks II<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Beatles &#8211; &#8216;Get Back&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Let It Be (Naked Version \/ Remastered 2013)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lcA-qlMP11s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After The Beatles recorded <em>Let It Be<\/em>, they handed it over to producer Phil Spector in the hopes that he could polish it up a bit. But the band, particularly Paul McCartney, wasn\u2019t happy with the end result, as it didn\u2019t capture the more raw sound they were aiming for.
