The emerging genre sought to define the decade, and it certainly did. An entire generation started dressing differently as boys started wearing their sisters’ skinny jeans, straightening their hair, and fully expressing teenage angst. Girls tried every exotic hair color with teased hairstyles and colorful skinny jeans. The bands that tapped into this trend became the faces and soundtrack of the movement. In hindsight, this era has a specific time and place style that is often nostalgic to middle-aged millennials. The younger generations are now being raised on the music of that time, just as millennials were raised on classic rock. Emo bands of the early 2000s have become the millennials’ classic rock. Here are 4 defining emo bands of the 2000s.

Fall Out Boy

Fall Out Boy formed in Wilmette, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, in 2001. Their debut album, Take This To Your Grave, was a minor success with the hit “Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy.” But it was From Under The Cork Tree in 2005 that made Fall Out Boy a massive commercial success. The album’s first single, “Sugar, We’re Goin Down,” reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the band’s first top-ten hit. A second single, “Dance, Dance,” peaked at No. 9 on the Hot 100. Although the album’s third single peaked at No. 65, the video reached No. 1 on TRL, MTV’s music video countdown program at the time. The album was defining for the emerging emo genre and placed Fall Out Boy at the forefront of emo.

Dashboard Confessional

One of the earliest successful emo bands was Dashboard Confessional. Their debut album, The Swiss Army Romance, was released in 2000. It serves as one of the earliest examples of emo becoming more defined. They followed up with The Places You’ve Come To Fear The Most in 2001. Dashboard Confessional’s second album peaked at No. 5 on the US Independent Albums chart, and reached 108 on the Billboard 200. The album’s single, “Screaming Infidelities,” peaked at No. 22 on the US Alternative Airplay chart. Songs from these two albums were performed on an episode of MTV Unplugged. It was then released as a live album on December 17, 2002. The live album reached No. 1 on Billboard’s US Heatseekers Albums chart and US Independent Albums chart.

My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance formed in New Jersey in September 2001. Lead singer Gerard Way witnessed the 9/11 attacks and felt a desire to express himself creatively in light of the tragedy hitting close to home. They released their debut, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, in 2002. The albums contained the track “Skylines and Turnstiles,” a song about 9/11. It was the first song Way wrote for the group. It was their second studio album, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, in 2004, that broke the band into mainstream success. The album’s first single, “I’m Not Okay (I Promise),” peaked at No. 86 on the Hot 100 but reached No. 4 on the US Alternative Airplay chart. “Helena,” the album’s second single, was the band’s first to chart well on the Hot 100. It peaked at No. 33 on the chart in 2004.

Their third studio album, The Black Parade, was a massive success in 2006. It’s one of the most commercially successful emo albums. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums chart. The Black Parade spawned four hit singles, with “Welcome To The Black Parade” becoming the band’s first No. 1 in the UK.

Taking Back Sunday

Taking Back Sunday is another early emo band, formed in 1999. Their debut album, Tell All Your Friends, was released on March 26, 2002. It was a minor success, but one that grew to be influential for future emo bands. The album’s second single, “Cute Without The ‘E’ (Cut From The Team)” became a fan favorite. Their second album, Where You Want To Be, was their first successful release. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart. Additionally, it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. “A Decade Under The Influence” was the album’s first single and became the band’s breakout hit. It peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

However, their breakthrough album is considered to be Louder Now in 2005. Louder Now debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and reached the top ten on multiple charts. The album’s lead single, “MakeDamnSure,” reached No. 8 on the Alternative Airplay chart, becoming one of the band’s best-charting hits.
