In 1977, Van Halen<\/a> was gathering material for their iconic self-titled debut album. Inspired by the surge of punk bands in the US and UK, Edward Van Halen figured he’d take a stab at punk. He wrote a guitar riff and built a little bit of a structure around two simple chords. Not sure how the band would feel about it, Van Halen shelved the idea for six months. Eventually, Edward presented the song to the band, who convinced him it could be a hit. Lead singer David Lee Roth wrote lyrics and harmony parts that would become the basis of the iconic track, but didn’t present these to the band for nearly a year. The lyrics of “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”<\/a> were finally established, and they took it into the studio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally, the song was recorded for their 1977 demo, produced by Gene Simmons. This demo secured the band a recording deal with Warner Bros. The song was then re-recorded for Van Halen’s debut album. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The song shifted from its original punk style into a classic rock anthem. It’s not the only song on the debut album with punk elements. The appropriately titled “Atomic Punk” was also featured on the album. Though many wouldn’t label Van Halen as punk, their approach to their debut was punk. The album was raw, mostly recorded in a few takes, and challenged overly polished rock releases of the time. The result put Van Halen at the forefront of rock music and garnered much praise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
