Yet the gloomy track appearing on Soundgarden\u2019s 1994 grunge masterpiece, <em>Superunknown<\/em>, was inspired by a supernatural hallucination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Behind the Lyrics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"4th Of July\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VCZFuQmoJ3M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the opening verse, Cornell uses a shower as a baptismal metaphor, but the mood feels like the opposite of being reborn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Shower in the dark day, clean sparks diving down,<br>Cool in the waterway where the baptized drown.<br>Naked in the cold sun,&nbsp;breathing life like fire,<br>I thought I was the only one, but that was just a lie<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of a baptism, Cornell was enduring a bad acid trip. \u201cOne time I was on acid, and there were voices ten feet behind my head,\u201d Cornell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CfmS6l9M7wT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in 1994. \u201cThe whole time I\u2019d be walking, they\u2019d be talking behind me. It actually made me feel good, because I felt like I was with some people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2019Cause I heard it in the wind,<br>And I saw it in the sky,<br>I thought it was the end,<br>I thought it was the Fourth of July<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this isn\u2019t Independence Day. Cornell\u2019s hallucinations are apocalyptic here, and the singer is gripped by paranoia. Soon, Jesus, who \u201ctries to crack a smile,\u201d is buried \u201cbeneath another shovel load.\u201d And Cornell\u2019s guitar riff, one of his finest, repeats and descends inescapably in a downward spiral of gloom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chris Cornell Explained \u201c4th Of July\u201d in More Depth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cornell further explained the song\u2019s inspiration: \u201cIt was kinda like a dream, though, where I\u2019d wake up and look and focus once in a while and realize there was no one there&#8230; \u20184th of July\u2019 is pretty much about that day. You wouldn\u2019t get that if you read it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biblical themes are nothing new to Cornell\u2019s songwriting, most notably in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/soundgarden\/jesus-christ-pose\">\u201cJesus Christ Pose\u201d<\/a>, from the band\u2019s breakout album, <em>Badmotorfinger<\/em>. You can also spot the heavy blues DNA of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin in Soundgarden\u2019s music.
