But the No. 1 hit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/blur\/country-house\">\u201cCountry House\u201d<\/a>, and the album it appears on, <em>The Great Escape<\/em>, would be Blur\u2019s last to feature Cool Britannia\u2019s cultural pride. Soon, they\u2019d reinvent their sound by looking toward American indie rock for inspiration. And few Blur tunes sound more like the Yanks than \u201cSong 2\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you likely know its hook, \u201c<em>Woo-hoo!<\/em>\u201d, do you know the following three facts?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blur - Song 2 (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SSbBvKaM6sk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Utilitarian Title<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many artists use working titles as placeholders for new songs before they complete the lyrics. For Blur, \u201cSong 2\u201d represented the track\u2019s placement on the band\u2019s self-titled fifth album\u2014literally the second song on the LP. They could have called it \u201cWoo-Hoo\u201d, but instead, album geography won out and one of Britpop\u2019s \u201cbig four\u201d finally broke through in the U.S. with a working title that became the final title for a tune that began as a joke. Which brings us to the next fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>This Joke Isn\u2019t Funny Anymore<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Guitarist Graham Coxon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/egzyP83cUtM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> \u201cSong 2\u201d was meant to be a joke, a V-sign to the record label, or what we in the U.S. recognize as flipping the bird. Coxon\u2019s guitar part features an unhinged riff that he played recklessly to mimic the skill level of a child. However, to the band\u2019s surprise, the record label loved the chaotic track. And so did the rest of the world, as it remains Blur\u2019s defining song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Grunge Unplugged<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though now known as a loud and distorted anthem, singer Damon Albarn had originally recorded an acoustic demo of the song in a slower tempo. It was Coxon\u2019s idea to speed things up, and according to producer Stephen Street, Albarn sang gibberish over the new arrangement but ultimately left what he\u2019d improvised in the studio.
