Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains each shared elements of heavy metal, classic rock, and punk. While Black Sabbath, Neil Young, and The Clash are obvious touchstones, here are three bands you may not realize also shaped grunge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Meat Puppets<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Plateau\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3Ik6KeYD4hg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For many, Nirvana\u2019s iconic <em>MTV Unplugged<\/em> performance and Kurt Cobain\u2019s choice of covers became an introduction to the Meat Puppets. \u201cLake Of Fire\u201d, \u201cOh, Me\u201d, and \u201cPlateau\u201d appear on <em>Meat Puppets II<\/em>, one of the most impactful indie rock releases of the 1980s. Led by brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood, Meat Puppets\u2019 blend of punk and psychedelic country provided a blueprint for Seattle\u2019s biggest bands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Nirvana, you\u2019ll notice the DNA of country music in Soundgarden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/soundgarden\/rusty-cage\">\u201cRusty Cage\u201d<\/a> (see Johnny Cash\u2019s cover), Alice In Chains\u2019 \u201cDown In A Hole\u201d, and Pearl Jam\u2019s \u201cDaughter\u201d. Whether we\u2019re talking about grunge, punk, or country, it\u2019s all really a kind of folk music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dinosaur Jr.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"In a Jar\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1av6Xrh2SNE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>J Mascis once described Dinosaur Jr. as \u201cear-bleeding country.\u201d And though the band has punk and hardcore roots, classic rock defines them as much as any underground music scene. Mascis often rips guitar solos and riffs, while employing the noisy feedback of Neil Young, the Godfather of Grunge. Dinosaur Jr. influenced Nirvana and Soundgarden, but also Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, and, most recently, Kurt Vile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Music genres are typically viewed as separate islands, but Mascis\u2019s \u201cear-bleeding country\u201d has a long tradition with Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and others who turned up the volume of country music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Smithereens<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Smithereens - Blood And Roses\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vqML7WbOun8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kurt Cobain was listening to The Beatles and The Smithereens while recording <em>Nevermind<\/em>. He may have been trying to write a Pixies song when he penned \u201cSmells Like Teen Spirit\u201d, but much of Nirvana\u2019s groundbreaking album is built atop pop choruses and punk riffs. And The Smithereens style of power pop helped inform Cobain\u2019s earworm hooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grunge bands seemed uncomfortable with fame, but they presented themes of despair and isolation in unforgettable anthems.
