This LP sits on a dividing line between the glitzy hard rock scene that the Seattle bands would nudge from MTV and greater pop culture. And you likely know Alice In Chains\u2019 biggest hits, \u201cMan In The Box\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/alice-in-chains\/would\">\u201cWould?\u201d<\/a>, and \u201cRooster\u201d. But here are three facts you might not know about the grunge legends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Glam Roots<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alice In Chains - Man in the Box (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TAqZb52sgpU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time I\u2019ve used a lazy pun to connect one\u2019s musical roots with hair metal. But long before grunge became a rock subgenre, singer Layne Staley joined a band called Sleze, which sounded more like M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce than Black Sabbath. Sleze later changed their name to Alice N\u2019 Chains, and though the styling resembles Guns N\u2019 Roses, the change predates <em>Appetite For Destruction<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staley\u2019s teenage band didn\u2019t achieve the success of M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce or GN\u2019R; for that, he\u2019d have to wait until meeting guitarist Jerry Cantrell. His new band with Cantrell, the drummer Sean Kinney, and the bassist Mike Starr existed under various names, including Diamond Lie, before adopting the name of Staley\u2019s former outfit\u2014this time styled as Alice In Chains. From there, they ousted the hair metal scene Staley once inhabited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bon Jovi<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bon Jovi - Livin&#039; On A Prayer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lDK9QqIzhwk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But it seems Alice In Chains weren\u2019t finished with hair metal. While recording their debut LP, <em>Facelift<\/em>, producer Dave Jerden heard Bon Jovi\u2019s smash \u201cLivin\u2019 On A Prayer\u201d on the radio. Richie Sambora\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3UM_1I8SQ_o?si=Zi8mrrSeDiWM5Iqs&amp;t=1876\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">talk box riff stood out to Jerden<\/a>, who then suggested adding the effect to \u201cMan In The Box\u201d. Once the breakthrough track landed on MTV, Cantrell\u2019s bluesy riff helped shift pop culture toward the Pacific Northwest. And as Bon Jovi did in the 1980s, Alice In Chains recorded several hits that defined the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Odd Times<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alice In Chains - Them Bones (Official HD Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zTuD8k3JvxQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cantrell, as Alice In Chains\u2019 primary songwriter, was influenced by Black Sabbath. And if you\u2019ve been trained in the dark arts of Black Sabbath, you must know Tony Iommi is the riff lord. So Cantrell became a lord of the riffs himself, as bangers like \u201cMan In The Box\u201d and \u201cThem Bones\u201d prove. The latter riff is written in a 7\/8 time signature as opposed to most tunes, which are written in bars of 3 or 4. Now, without getting into the weeds of music theory, bars of 7 don\u2019t easily feel natural. But you may not have noticed the missing beat in \u201cThem Bones\u201d.
