On tour, the group\u2019s frontman Chris Cornell felt claustrophobic, which he and his peers lamented even more so once under the bright lights of outsized fame after grunge broke in the early 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what many might have missed in the howling screams and giant riffs of Soundgarden\u2019s original is the Southern Gothic tale in the lyrics. It embodies an American cultural moment. But it also includes a deeper connection that cuts across musical genres and geography\u2014later revealed by the outlaw country legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Johnny Cash - Rusty Cage\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9CrBqRb3VGM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Feeling Like a Caged Animal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI honestly can\u2019t remember where, exactly. But I have a vivid memory of staring out the window, looking at the countryside, and feeling pent-up,\u201d Cornell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spinmagazine.com\/2011\/11\/soundgarden-rusty-cage-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> <em>Spin<\/em> in 2011, recalling Soundgarden\u2019s early touring days. \u201cI never wrote any of the words down, but I somehow remembered them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You wired me awake,<br>And hit me with a hand of broken nails.<br>You tied my lead and pulled my chain,<br>To watch my blood begin to boil.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cornell wanted to write a \u201chillbilly Black Sabbath crossover.\u201d So he arranged a guitar riff that fit his sense of captivity. However, it wasn\u2019t until Johnny Cash covered \u201cRusty Cage\u201d that the dark poetry in Cornell\u2019s lyrics became clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Cash\u2019s version arrived, Cornell told SiriusXM that several people reached out to compliment the words. He laughed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=POi_Vd3FMsk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cWell, when our version came out, I didn\u2019t get one message.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Too cold to start a fire,<br>I\u2019m burning diesel, burning dinosaur bones.<br>I\u2019ll take the river down to Stillwater,<br>And ride a pack of dogs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Man in Black<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cash recorded \u201cRusty Cage\u201d for his 1996 album <em>Unchained<\/em>. You might view the album title as Cornell\u2019s frustration experienced from the perspective of freedom. But Cash had emerged from another kind of prison, and his goth country reading of Soundgarden\u2019s hit became an important chapter in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/johnny-cash\/delias-gone\">career rebirth with producer Rick Rubin<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not a stretch to notice the connection between heavy metal, grunge, and country music. The rootsy origins of \u201cRusty Cage\u201d and its dark poetry echo the tales of Southern Gothic literature.
