While some songs become bigger than the artist\u2014as any one-hit wonder might tell you\u2014Radiohead managed to survive the colossal success of their first single. They did so by revolting against it and told us exactly what they were doing in \u201cMy Iron Lung\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We\u2019ll Have No More of This<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Radiohead - My Iron Lung\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pRU-6vaKaf4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The success of \u201cCreep\u201d has a lot to do with the early 90s zeitgeist of slacker rock, sad lyrics, and bands following the quiet\/loud songwriting format of the Pixies. You can imagine a major label executive spotting a blonde and shaggy Thom Yorke, resembling Kurt Cobain, as the chorus of \u201cCreep\u201d blasts into existence in similar ways to Nirvana\u2019s \u201cSmells Like Teen Spirit\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, when Radiohead returned with their second album, <em>The Bends<\/em>, Yorke was in no mood to reproduce his biggest song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Suck, suck your teenage thumb,<br>Toilet-trained and dumb,<br>When the power runs out,<br>We\u2019ll just hum<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though \u201cMy Iron Lung\u201d features echoes of Brit-grunge, it also foreshadows Radiohead\u2019s post-rock future. Guitarist Jonny Greenwood plays glitching arpeggios as if to give kinetic energy to Yorke\u2019s anxiety: \u201c<em>We are losing it \/ Can\u2019t you tell<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if anyone was confused as to what was going on here, Yorke puts it plainly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This, this is our new song,<br>Just like the last one,<br>A total waste of time,<br>My iron lung<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is how Radiohead overcame the suffocating weight of expectation. They\u2019d written one of the decade\u2019s timeless anthems. Next, they\u2019d reimagine the very essence of the rock band by utterly deconstructing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fitter, Happier, More Productive<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, Radiohead refused to play \u201cCreep\u201d. But once it returned to the set, you could sense relief in Yorke\u2019s performance. It didn\u2019t consume him after all, and perhaps the revolt became a kind of revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Bends<\/em> previewed future masterpieces like <em>OK Computer<\/em>, <em>Kid A<\/em>, and <em>In Rainbows<\/em>. And what\u2019s most impressive is how Radiohead sounds nothing like \u201cCreep\u201d, yet somehow their defining song remains\u2014after all the experimentation and contrarianism\u2014a distillation of what makes Radiohead Radiohead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And if you\u2019re frightened,<br>You can be frightened,<br>You can be; it\u2019s okay<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Radiohead is known for being one of the most transformative bands of our time.
