Casting away what was known about the proper recording process, Darnielle instead recorded and released full albums using a cassette boombox. The scratchy quality paired well with Darnielle&#8217;s vocals. John Darnielle then created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/songs\/the-mountain-goats\" id=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/songs\/the-mountain-goats\">The Mountain Goats<\/a>. Though there have been many collaborators over the years, Darnielle is the only constant. Darnielle has been with The Mountain Goats since 1991, launching the project in Claremont, California.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Darnielle had a bit of a tragic upbringing, living with an abusive stepfather. He later turned that experience into haunting tales on <em>The Sunset Tree<\/em>, released in 2005. Darnielle was a fan of professional wrestling and frequently attended events with his stepfather. He also later wrote about those experiences on <em>Beat The Champ<\/em>, released in 2015. The wrestling-themed album was about his childhood favorite, Chavo Guerrero Sr. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 1990s, Darnielle became a psychiatric nurse at the Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California. It was during this time that Darnielle purchased a Panasonic boombox from Circuit City. He began writing, recording, and playing at local small venues. Darnielle recorded <em>Taboo VI: The Homecoming<\/em>, an EP intended to be heard by friends and no one else. It&#8217;s now a highly sought-after collector&#8217;s item for diehard fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Color in Your Cheeks\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rbtoXur9kcA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">John Darnielle and The Mountain Goats Find Success<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The specific boombox used for The Mountain Goats, was a Panasonic RX-FT500. It&#8217;s a cheap, dual-cassette player that helped define the band&#8217;s signature sound. From The Mountain Goats&#8217; first release, <em>Zopilote Machine<\/em> in 1994, through <em>All Hail West Texas<\/em> in 2002, this boombox was used. That&#8217;s six studio albums recorded on a boombox that cost roughly $100. Their widely acclaimed 2002 release, <em>All Hail West Texas<\/em>, was the last used with the boombox until 2020. Following its release, Darnielle and The Mountain Goats sought more polished recording techniques and a shift in the band&#8217;s output. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up until then, the majority of Darnielle&#8217;s songs were fictional stories. That&#8217;s what made Darnielle&#8217;s songwriting extraordinary. The lo-fi quality, mixed with Darnielle&#8217;s incredible literary ambition, gave his songs character. Albums such as <em>We Shall All Be Hea<\/em>led in 2004 and <em>The Sunset Tree in 2005 <\/em>became much more autobiographical. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, Darnielle returned to the Panasonic Boombox method, surprising fans. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r0CVAozw_OM&amp;list=OLAK5uy_nCZ7Y6Pm5W3zg396SpZzSgwh8-ntiyagg\" id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r0CVAozw_OM&amp;list=OLAK5uy_nCZ7Y6Pm5W3zg396SpZzSgwh8-ntiyagg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Songs For Pierre Chuvin<\/a> <\/em>fits right into the original six studio albums with its signature lo-fi quality. For one album only, The Mountain Goats embraced their initial character and then returned to polished releases. That marks seven studio releases altogether, recorded on a $100 boombox purchased at Circuit City in the early 1990s.
