And many are quite lengthy. But as guitarists expanded the art of the solo, they also proved that listeners had longer attention spans than the radio programmers of the time had assumed. So in the spirit of epic shredding, here are three long classic rock guitar solos that I imagine you don\u2019t want to end. No matter how many times you\u2019ve heard them. And if these sagas end too soon, just put them on repeat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cMachine Gun\u201d by Jimi Hendrix<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Machine Gun (Live)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lw2L_vGUMtE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Band Of Gypsys<\/em>, the first Jimi Hendrix album recorded without his band, The Experience, was recorded live at the Fillmore East in New York City. Backed by bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles, \u201cMachine Gun\u201d features Hendrix ripping through an ambitious anti-war jam. Though the track approaches the 13-minute mark, it could have kept going. Here, Hendrix and his new rhythm section mimic the sound of a chaotic battlefield with the kind of shredding that blew the minds of Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Well, I pick up my axe and fight like a farmer,<br>You know what I mean?<br>Hey, and your bullets keep knocking me down<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cDogs\u201d by Pink Floyd<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dogs\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tq3bYPLBcA4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nestled between <em>Wish You Were Here<\/em> and <em>The Wall<\/em> is Pink Floyd\u2019s 10<sup>th<\/sup> studio album, <em>Animals<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/pink-floyd\/dogs\">\u201cDogs\u201d<\/a> features multiple guitar solos, and David Gilmour punctuates the sprawling tune with soaring melodies and dramatic blues. The track stretches past 17 minutes, and Gilmour\u2019s weeping notes add sadness to the Orwellian concept of humans\u2019 grinning self-dealing and primal cynicism. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And it\u2019s too late to lose the weight<br>You used to need to throw around.<br>So have a&nbsp;good drown as you go down,<br>All alone, dragged down by the stone.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cWar Pigs\u201d by Black Sabbath<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"War Pigs\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bc5Nk1DXyEY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Black Sabbath musical interludes feature Tony Iommi&#8217;s multi-tracking guitar solos. One on top of the other. Similar to \u201cMachine Gun\u201d above, this anti-war epic uses a deluge of blues licks to give one the disorienting sense of a firefight. \u201cGenerals gathered in their masses \/ Just like witches at black masses,\u201d Ozzy Osbourne sings between Iommi\u2019s stabbing power chords.
