After debuting in Manchester, England, in April, the play will premiere in London at the Barbican Theatre on October 31 and run through January 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album marked a transitional period for Radiohead and rests atop several thresholds. First, they were fulfilling their contract with EMI. Next, they\u2019d self-release <em>In Rainbows<\/em>, allowing fans to pay what they wanted as the music industry navigated how fans absorbed culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hail To The Thief<\/em> also features more guitars than the post-rock and electronic stylings of <em>Kid A<\/em> and <em>Amnesiac<\/em>. It closed one chapter and began another. The album is a lengthy 14 tracks and 56 minutes, so consider these highlights a preview of Radiohead seemingly shedding ideas like old skins as they moved forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201c2 + 2 + 5\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2 + 2 = 5\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2w6kHS_IRrE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thom Yorke is prescient. Revisit 1997 and his anxieties about technology, governments, and the world on <em>OK Computer<\/em>, for example. He wasn\u2019t finished. Radiohead opens <em>Hail To The Thief<\/em> with a borrowed pronouncement from George Orwell\u2019s <em>Nineteen Eighty-Four<\/em>. Decades later, Yorke\u2019s (and Orwell\u2019s) worries have come true as parts of the West backslide into authoritarianism and citizens trade objective reality for shared and comforting narratives. The good news: Radiohead returned with loud guitars, and the dystopia gets a banging soundtrack. Crank this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cSail To The Moon\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sail To The Moon\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/INvrv9ppxvQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Radiohead began perfecting lullabies on <em>The Bends<\/em>. While the early ones featured acoustic guitars and echoes of Jeff Buckley, eventually, the lullabies became glitchy, celestial, and occasionally disorienting. Here, Yorke writes for his infant son Noah. \u201cMaybe you\u2019ll be president, but know right from wrong \/ Or in the flood, you\u2019ll build an ark and sail us to the moon,\u201d he sings, referencing the biblical Noah. Still, the flood metaphor fits with a father juggling anxiety and optimism in a chaotic world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cThere, There\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Radiohead - There, There\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7AQSLozK7aA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The first single from <em>Hail To The Thief<\/em> features an acoustic drum groove. A return to form of sorts. Meanwhile, Jonny Greenwood plays a chord arpeggio inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TjvvK-Rj0WI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John McGeoch\u2019s work with Siouxsie And The Banshees<\/a>. Returning to the layered percussion, the rhythm recalls the experimentalism of Can, though there are hints of Radiohead\u2019s early alt-rock period.
