Yet whatever writer\u2019s block they may have endured soon gave way to a transformation for the band. <em>Rubber Soul<\/em> helped shift the focus from pop singles to the album as a greater medium for expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But before Lennon got there, he did nothing. Literally, nothing. And by doing nothing, he wound up writing an iconic tune that proves nothing is still something, especially in the hands or mind of a Beatle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Beatle Does Nothing and Sleeps All Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nowhere Man (Remastered 2009)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8scSwaKbE64?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lennon had retreated to his home amid the dizzying days of Beatlemania. For long periods, he\u2019d do nothing but sleep or have sex, apparently. \u201cI don\u2019t mind writing or reading or watching or speaking, but sex is the only physical thing I can be bothered with any more,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beatlesbible.com\/1966\/03\/04\/how-does-a-beatle-live-by-maureen-cleave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> the <em>Evening Standard<\/em> at the time. The article went on to describe Lennon\u2019s epic sleeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isolated at home, the world\u2019s biggest rock star remained utterly idle, which led him to write a Beatles classic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>He\u2019s a real nowhere man,<br>Sitting in his nowhere land,<br>Making all his nowhere plans for nobody<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNowhere Man\u201d may have been inspired by Lennon\u2019s life of leisure, but the song didn\u2019t come easily. \u201cI\u2019d spent five hours that morning trying to write a song that was meaningful and good and I finally gave up and lay down,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/49127412-all-we-are-saying?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, seemingly out of nowhere, it arrived in its entirety. It shows the value of space and silence to the creative process. We often make plans, attempting to plot out a creative thing or some destination. But Lennon\u2019s song is a lesson in letting go. Perhaps there\u2019s a little nowhere man inside each of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Doesn\u2019t have a point of view,<br>Knows not where he\u2019s going to,<br>Isn\u2019t he a bit like you and me?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Changing Rock Music Forever<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With <em>Rubber Soul<\/em>, The Beatles unwittingly changed the future of rock music. It inspired Brian Wilson to craft <em>Pet Sounds<\/em>, which in turn created a rivalry between The Beach Boys and The Beatles as the two traded masterpieces in the 1960s.
