In a way, it is, but not like you might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Katie Crutchfield, who records and performs under the name Waxahatchee, her experience growing up in Alabama continues to thread her work. And in \u201cFire\u201d, she glances inward in a moving and therapeutic folk song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Waxahatchee - Fire (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cEyYlyRr2_U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Over the Mississippi<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a press release, she <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/waxahatchee-announces-new-album-and-tour-shares-new-song-fire-listen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cThe idea and melody for \u201cFire\u201d was dreamt up while driving over the Mississippi River from Memphis into West Memphis, AR, sun reflecting off the water which literally made West Memphis glow.\u201d But her partner and musician, Kevin Morby, was also in the car. So she kept her idea quiet, and when they stopped, she wrote it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>That\u2019s what I wanted,<br>It\u2019s not as if we cry a river, call it rain.<br>West Memphis is on fire in the light of day.<br>Give me something; it ain\u2019t enough,<br>It ain\u2019t enough.<br>I take it for granted,<br>If I could love you unconditionally,<br>I could iron out the edges of the darkest sky.<br>For some of us, it ain\u2019t enough,<br>It ain\u2019t enough<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crutchfield studies her past to learn about the person she\u2019s become. \u201cFire\u201d is a song about destination and relationships, though she\u2019s not singing to a romantic partner. Instead, Crutchfield is in conversation with herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>When I take off driving,<br>Past places, been tainted,<br>I put on a good show for you.<br>And when I turn back around,<br>Will you drain me back out?<br>Will you let me believe that I broke through?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which Way Is Home?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When Crutchfield drives from her current home in Kansas City, Missouri, to her hometown in Birmingham, Alabama, she crosses the Mississippi River through Memphis. It\u2019s like she\u2019s crossing an emotional Rubicon between her past life and the current one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even as we evolve, it brings up the question of how much of our past selves remains.
