Partly because of the band\u2019s iconic performance, but also because of how the set design eerily resembled a funeral scene. (The episode aired in December 1993, and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in April 1994.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, MTV\u2019s rote <em>Unplugged<\/em> programming was ubiquitous at the time, but Nirvana\u2019s appearance was unlike any other. They had already shifted pop culture in 1991 with <em>Nevermind<\/em>. And here, they transformed another institution, as these surprising facts reveal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plugged-In<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World (MTV Unplugged)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fregObNcHC8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the show is called <em>MTV Unplugged<\/em>, Kurt Cobain did, in fact, plug his acoustic guitar into an amplifier for the performance. Cobain\u2019s 1959 Martin D-18E, which sold at auction in 2020 for more than six million dollars, was plugged into a Fender Twin. (The amp sat in front of him, hidden behind a wooden box.) Instead, nearly half the set features covers, including songs by The Vaselines and Meat Puppets. Cobain helped shine a light on two of his favorite indie bands, and since Nirvana\u2019s performance, \u201cJesus Doesn\u2019t Want Me For A Sunbeam\u201d, \u201cPlateau\u201d, and \u201cLake Of Fire\u201d became hits in their own right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Jesus don\u2019t want me for a sunbeam,<br>Sunbeams are never made like me<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mark Lanegan as a North Star<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Live On MTV Unplugged, 1993 \/ Unedited)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hEMm7gxBYSc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cobain was hesitant to play the show. But he found inspiration in Mark Lanegan\u2019s 1990 album, <em>The Winding Sheet<\/em>. Lanegan\u2019s solo debut contains a cover of \u201cWhere Did You Sleep Last Night\u201d, which also features Cobain on electric guitar. Nirvana ended their <em>Unplugged<\/em> set with the folk traditional, and when introducing it, Cobain attributed the song to his favorite performer, Lead Belly.
