Led by singer Amy Lee, the band\u2019s brand of gothic metal tapped into rock music\u2019s post-grunge milieu. But before Lee penned her signature hit, she had a disquieting conversation with a mutual friend. She wasn\u2019t expecting his pointed question. And she likely didn\u2019t expect the future that query would ignite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are You Happy?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Evanescence - Bring Me To Life (Official HD Music Video) ft. Then Lee\u2019s future husband, Josh Hartzler, asked if she was happy. \u201cAnd it shocked my heart, and I looked down and just started making up excuses,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening verse describes the encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How can you see into my eyes,<br>Like open doors?<br>Leading you down into my core.<br>Where I\u2019ve become so numb,<br>Without a soul,<br>My spirit sleeping somewhere cold.<br>Until you find it there,<br>And lead it back home<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd I felt like he could just see straight into my soul. That inspired the whole song. Years later, I told him it was about him, and the rest is history,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Wake me up) Wake me up inside,<br>(I can\u2019t wake up) Wake me up inside.<br>(Save me) Call my name and save me from the dark.<br>(Wake me up) Bid my blood to run,<br>(I can\u2019t wake up) Before I come undone,<br>(Save me) Save me from the nothing I\u2019ve become<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Life Among the Dead, Nu-Metal, and Rap Rock<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Written by Lee with guitarist Ben Moody and songwriter David Hodges, \u201cBring Me To Life\u201d remains the band\u2019s defining song. Its blend of nu-metal and rap rock arrived at a time when both genres were culturally dominant thanks to blockbuster releases by Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and Korn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBring Me To Life\u201d put Evanescence on the map.
