Wilco<\/a>‘s Yankee Foxtrot Hotel<\/em> was a turning point for the indie rock group. By 2001, not only had the band changed, but so had lead singer Jeff Tweedy. He got nostalgic on the album’s debut single, while also penning a lesson to be learned time and time again. The lead single, “Heavy Metal Drummer,” is about Jeff Tweedy’s punk rock origins in St. Louis, MO. It was there that Tweedy would frequent local shows and remembers seeing KISS cover bands. Back then, he was overly judgmental and, upon looking back, admitted how harsh he was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tweedy explained this in a Rolling Stone<\/em> interview in 2010<\/a>. “I worry that people look at that song as too sentimental, very nostalgic. But I guess that\u2019s what it is. The assumption I\u2019ve heard a lot of people make is that I was the one playing Kiss covers \u2013 I wasn\u2019t. I\u2019m talking about that band that I can\u2019t find anymore, that I wish I could, because now I would feel less superior to them, and be able to enjoy them more.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
