In 2020, Big Thief<\/a>\u2019s leader Adrianne Lenker released a pair of solo albums, Songs<\/em> and Instrumentals<\/em>. They were recorded quietly in a Massachusetts cabin. Captured with analog equipment, Lenker\u2019s voice compresses onto the tape like the fading memories in her gorgeous ballad \u201cAnything\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lo-fi recording reminds me of the way we used to capture video\u2014before digital devices and certainly before smartphones. And when we return to view the past with old tools, we hope the medium has survived time. Occasionally, the images and sound fade in and out. It can be warbly. The sound of our minds clinging to the memories. That\u2019s what Lenker\u2019s \u201cAnything\u201d sounds like to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
