Perhaps it\u2019s the old Hollywood signals, or the rawness of her homemade videos, like the entire aesthetic is slowly coming in and out of focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in \u201cWest Coast\u201d, Del Rey appears to be California dreaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lana Del Rey - West Coast\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oKxuiw3iMBE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dream of Californication<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Del Rey\u2019s California song begins with the Los Angeles locals and spirit that inspired much of <em>Ultraviolence<\/em>. The city has a way of pulling people toward it\u2014chasing a dream, escaping a hometown, or getting lost in its density and proximity to the ocean has dragged many away from deep roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Down on the West Coast, they got a saying,<br>\u201cIf you\u2019re not drinking, then you\u2019re not playing.\u201d<br>But you\u2019ve got the music,<br>You\u2019ve got the music in you, don\u2019t you?<br>Down on the West Coast, I get this feeling like,<br>It all could happen; that\u2019s why I\u2019m leaving.<br>You for the moment, you for the moment,<br>Boy blue, yeah, you<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps Del Rey is singing about her roots in New York City. Los Angeles may pull one away from home, but home offers its own kind of gravitational pull. You miss it. You want to go back. And maybe someday, you will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You\u2019re falling hard, I push away, I\u2019m feeling hot to the touch,<br>You say you miss me, and I wanna say, \u201cI miss you so much.\u201d<br>But something keeps me really quiet; I\u2019m alive, I\u2019m a lush,<br>Your love, your love, our love<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brooklyn Baby<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>She hangs with a lover here while he smokes. It\u2019s ordinary and poetry all at once with echoes of Charles Bukowski\u2019s dry realism. (Bukowski, too, adopted Los Angeles as his home.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I can see my baby swinging,<br>His Parliament\u2019s on fire, and his hands are up.<br>On the balcony, and I\u2019m singing,<br>Ooh, baby, ooh, baby, I\u2019m in love<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Black Keys\u2019 leader, Dan Auerbach, produced the track. The groove is deep, and it brings to mind the seedy corners of Los Angeles. The dark, mysterious corners where great wealth seems to find the street. The place that inspired Jim Morrison to write a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/the-doors\/la-woman\">farewell letter<\/a> to it before he split for Paris. And then eventually, he split for good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this song is all about movement. It follows \u201cBrooklyn Baby\u201d on the album and also shadows Del Rey\u2019s travels from east to west.
