She emerged from New York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/articles\/the-meaning-behind-danceteria-by-madonna-and-her-return-to-where-it-all-began\/\">Danceteria<\/a> in the early 1980s. But not just any old record will do. Something powerful enough to transform the revelers into blissful motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hey, Mr. DJ, put a record on,<br>I wanna dance with my baby<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-written with the French dance music producer Mirwais, Madonna\u2019s party hit connects various periods of dance music\u2014from the deep grooves of funk to the hypnotic minimalism of krautrock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its heart, \u201cMusic\u201d celebrates the irrational. And few activities will help one abandon self-awareness and shyness like dancing. If the DJs are doing their job well, then what takes over is the primal urge to move in time with the invisible physics of sound happening between the bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the dance floor is one of the most reliable places to leave the prosaic disappointments of life behind. At least for a night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hey, Mr. DJ, put a record on,<br>I wanna dance with my baby.<br>And when the music starts, I never wanna stop,<br>It\u2019s gonna drive me crazy<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Come Together<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Music is the great unifier, and here Madonna sings that it can connect the capitalists with the proletariat looking to destroy the class above it. I\u2019m not sure if Marx, Engels, Lenin, or Trotsky would agree, but regardless, Madge finds solidarity on the dance floor. And it may be my favorite Madonna lyric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Music makes the people come together,<br>Music mix the bourgeoisie and the rebel<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, she wasn\u2019t thinking about economic theory or politics. The inspiration for the song\u2019s most recognizable line was actually a Sting concert. In 2000, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/madonna-cant-stop-the-music-164212\/3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> she was struck by how the audience behaved while Sting performed his latest solo music. Then, once he began playing Police songs, the crowd abandoned their politeness and, she said, \u201csuddenly, people lost their inhibition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what music does to people,\u201d she thought. \u201cIt really does bring people together, and it erases so much.
