But it\u2019s also about how the ruling class and the ruled coexist in a society. In the opening verse, Chris Martin reveals how power often rests atop shaky ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I used to rule the world,<br>Seas would rise when I gave the word.<br>Now in the morning I sleep alone,<br>Sweep the streets I used to own<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the revolution is the easy part. Once in power, how does one avoid becoming paranoid of losing power? And how does one avoid becoming the very thing they\u2019ve overthrown?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I used to roll the dice,<br>Feel the fear in my enemy\u2019s eyes.<br>Listen as the crowd would sing:<br>\u201cNow the old king is dead, long live the king.\u201d<br>One minute, I held the key,<br>Next, the walls were closed on me.<br>And I discovered that my castles stand,<br>Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who Would Ever Want To Be King?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Coldplay\u2019s bassist Guy Berryman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhino.com\/article\/single-stories-coldplay-viva-la-vida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> <em>Q<\/em>, \u201cIt\u2019s a story about a king who\u2019s lost his kingdom, and all the album\u2019s artwork is based on the idea of revolutionaries and guerrillas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing,<br>Roman cavalry choirs are singing.<br>Be my mirror, my sword, and shield,<br>My missionaries in a foreign field.<br>For some reason, I can\u2019t explain,<br>Once you\u2019d gone, there was never,<br>Never an honest word.<br>And that was when I ruled the world<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s this slightly anti-authoritarian viewpoint that\u2019s crept into some of the lyrics and it\u2019s some of the pay-off between being surrounded by governments on one side, but also we\u2019re human beings with emotions and we\u2019re all going to die and the stupidity of what we have to put up with every day, hence the album title,\u201d Berryman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhino.com\/article\/single-stories-coldplay-viva-la-vida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>It was a wicked and wild wind,<br>Blew down the doors to let me in.<br>Shattered windows and the sound of drums,<br>People couldn\u2019t believe what I\u2019d become.<br>And revolutionaries wait,<br>For my head on a silver plate.<br>Just a puppet on a lonely string,<br>Oh, who would ever want to be king?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Photo by Shirlaine Forrest\/WireImage<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cViva La Vida\u201d is an important song for Coldplay.
