Eminem released “Stan”<\/a> as the third single from The Marshall Mathers LP<\/em> in 2000. The song became a worldwide hit. It was also acclaimed as some of the rapper’s best work. That’s due in large part to its harrowing lyrics, which proved his capabilities as a writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Stan” describes an obsessive fan who writes to Eminem over the span of several months. The fan’s behavior becomes increasingly alarming, especially when Eminem doesn’t write back immediately. Each verse takes the format of a letter. The song was inspired by Eminem’s personal experience with receiving unsettling fan mail, as well as his interpretation of “Thank You” by Dido<\/a>. Stan himself is a fictional character, and he and his actions in the song are not based on actual events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Stan” is a combination of the words \u201cstalker\u201d and “fan.” In the 20-plus years since the song’s release, the term has been used to describe fans, although not always negatively. In 2017, it was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
