The very thing a mother dedicates its existence to: avoiding pain, bumps, bruises, emotional and otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You remind me of my mother\u2019s greatest fear.<br>Gave her life for my protection,<br>Through the years, from my tears.<br>Then you came along and tore it down,<br>With your deception, you let me drown.<br>And all the tears my mother saved,<br>Hit me like a wave<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Backed by The TwoCity Chorus, Smith <a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/a\/sam-smith-summons-the-power-of-maternal-love-on-new-song-oh-mother\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained in a press statement<\/a> why they added a choir to the track. \u201cThe choir is meant to represent the fury of a mother witnessing her child\u2019s betrayal\u2014they\u2019re summoning a sort of divine feminine energy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Oh, beware the woman scorned,<br>She would move a mountain for me.<br>Cross the driest desert for her child,<br>Like a hurricane, her pain would rip the roots out from the ground<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hook offers retribution and reminds me of Johnny Cash singing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/johnny-cash\/gods-gonna-cut-you-down\">\u201cGod\u2019s Gonna Cut You Down\u201d<\/a>.
