Out now, the new LP finds the New York band and its front man, Julian Casablancas, responding to a modern world in tumult. And if you can\u2019t beat \u2019em, you might as well join \u2019em at the mall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Strokes - Going Shopping (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4u3iI1WuU0k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Worse Reality Awaits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Casablancas is no stranger to causing a fuss with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r3j2X4kLxTo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">controversial takes<\/a>. But here, he sings about various predators, cultural and the like. He also acknowledges the current and depressing state of affairs and the instinct to ignore it to keep one\u2019s sanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, he sings how it\u2019s easier to rebel when you\u2019ve got nothing to lose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Like a tiger, they will chase you down,<br>With words instead of claws.<br>They will seduce you till you reach the point,<br>To let yourself get mauled, oh.<br>The worse reality gets, the less you wanna hear about it,<br>Solidarity can be difficult when you got cool stuff to lose<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps ambling around as a massive, reanimated figure is better than absorbing the decline. And here, Casablancas may be using the mall as a metaphor for the human experience. Once thriving, busy, and socially engaged, malls are now vacuous relics that appear to be begging someone or something to put them out of business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I wanna be a seven-foot zombie,<br>The pay is low, but I gotta do something.<br>I\u2019m at the mall, and the song is bumping,<br>There goes my future wife in the little red jumpsuit<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting Rid of Plans<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many structure their lives and then become disappointed by the results. Not only do they fail in their designs, but they\u2019ve missed the fleeting moments of life because they were too busy planning for the future or thoughtlessly consuming slavish commercialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I\u2019m going away to the country,<br>Don\u2019t wander off too far,<br>I\u2019m going out my mind.<br>Throwing all my plans out the window,<br>Don\u2019t wanna waste my life,<br>I\u2019ll see you on the other side<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Casablancas reflects on whether he should voice opinions as a 47-year-old man.
