But the pleading tune describes something much more complex than simply going home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collins was inspired by Ken Kesey\u2019s 1962 novel, <em>One Flew Over The Cuckoo\u2019s Nest<\/em>. The narrator in \u201cTake Me Home\u201d is Randle McMurphy, a Korean War veteran and patient at a psychiatric hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>I\u2019m an Ordinary Man<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Take Me Home (2016 Remaster)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rnjAqU1e_4o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>McMurphy, who had pretended to lose his mind after being sentenced to work on a prison farm, wants to escape the hospital. He can feel the warmth of freedom outside his door. It\u2019s enough to give him hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Take that look of worry,<br>I\u2019m an ordinary man.<br>They don\u2019t tell me nothing,<br>So I find out all I can.<br>There\u2019s a fire that\u2019s been burning,<br>Right outside my door.<br>I can\u2019t see, but I feel it,<br>And it helps to keep me warm<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former prisoner of war understands how one finds little comforts when escape isn\u2019t an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>So, I, I don\u2019t mind,<br>No, I, I don\u2019t mind<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Seems so long I\u2019ve been waiting,<br>Still don\u2019t know what for.<br>There\u2019s no point in escaping,<br>I don\u2019t worry anymore<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>I Don\u2019t Remember<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-produced with Hugh Padgham, Collins\u2019s hook remains one of the most enduring from the 1980s. It appears on <em>No Jacket Required<\/em>, the third solo album by the ex-Genesis drummer-turned-singer. (Padgham helped craft the colossal drums that propel Collins\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/phil-collins\/in-the-air-tonight\">\u201cIn The Air Tonight\u201d<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTake Me Home\u201d is yearning, earnest, desperate. And when removed from the rest of the song, the chorus, often licensed in media, feels nostalgic. It also received a sky-high lift from backing vocalists Sting and Peter Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>So take, take me home, \u2019cause I don\u2019t remember,<br>Take, take me home, \u2019cause I don\u2019t remember<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in the context of McMurphy\u2019s desperation, \u201cTake Me Home\u201d is utterly heartbreaking. His life became a series of prisons. And there was no way out of this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home, for many, represents safety.
