With its iconic opening bass line and suitably surreal, creepy music video starring a puppet, it&#8217;s become one of the band&#8217;s signature songs and is a frequent piece of their live shows. In the UK, it hit No. 18 on the Singles Chart, while in the US, it peaked at No. 24 on Billboard&#8217;s Modern Rock Tracks chart. It&#8217;s remembered as one of the best songs to come out of alternative music in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The British Serial Killers Rumored to Be the Subject<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Interpol - Evil (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dkpgz3uQ58U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After the song&#8217;s release, fans speculated that &#8220;Evil&#8221; was written about British serial killers Fred and Rosemary West. Between 1971 and 1987, the couple killed a total of nine women, including Fred&#8217;s daughter, Charmaine. Fred committed suicide in prison, while Rosemary is still in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This interpretation of the song is largely due to the song&#8217;s opening lines: \u201c<em>Rosemary \/ Heaven restores you in life<\/em>.&#8221; Although the song also references &#8220;<em>a lifespan with no cellmate<\/em>&#8221; and a &#8220;<em>sentimental jury<\/em>,&#8221; the lyrics are otherwise vague and don&#8217;t seem to directly reference the couple or their crimes. Some interpretations see the lyrics as a conversation between the two killers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interpol Has Denied That \u201cEvil\u201d Is About the Wests<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019d hate to rain on someone\u2019s good time by spoiling the lore or theories about some songs, but generally, they are wrong. Everyone thinks &#8216;Evil&#8217; is about serial killers but it isn&#8217;t at all,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/article\/2024\/jul\/25\/interpol-im-very-glad-we-said-yes-to-putting-a-song-in-friends-it-was-a-pretty-hardcore-moment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frontman Paul Banks told <em>The Guardian<\/em> in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the band hasn&#8217;t explained what actually inspired the song, Banks did say it&#8217;s about &#8220;the art of nearly falling apart.&#8221; Its title was taken from <em>The Flowers of Evil<\/em>, a collection of poetry by Charles Baudelaire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some fans have also speculated that the &#8220;Rosemary&#8221; referenced in the opening lines could be a reference to Rosemary Kennedy, but it&#8217;s more likely that the name was chosen for its sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The name Rosemary is just because it\u2019s, to me, quite\u2026 angelic,&#8221; Banks explained. &#8220;Or I suppose\u2026 I don\u2019t want to say it&#8217;s a holy name, but you know what I mean. There\u2019s like a kind of inherent religiosity to that name.
