And quite a few well-known artists were excited too. You can hear The Strokes\u2019 influence on The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, and even Harry Styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rock music peaked culturally in the late 90s, with electronic, dance, and hip-hop becoming dominant. Guitars had taken a back seat to samplers, keyboards, drum machines, and eventually laptops. Still, The Strokes\u2019 guitar-centered garage rock inspired a new generation of guitarists. Hammond\u2019s primary instrument is a 1985 Japanese-made reissue of a 1972 Fender Stratocaster. And Valensi\u2019s main guitar is a 1995 Epiphone Riviera, which he borrowed\u2014and never returned\u2014from Hammond when The Strokes formed in the late 90s. The pedal-obsessed culture (guilty) has reached a comical state with clips of guitarists standing in front of ever-expanding rigs. But before you go broke thinking you need 20 pedals at your feet, The Strokes offer a valuable lesson in restraint. Hammond and Valensi, at least on the early records, each relied on two core pedals: an MXR Micro Amp and a Jekyll &amp; Hyde overdrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And a Basic Amp<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Strokes - The Modern Age (Official HD Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RzO7IGWGxu8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The final, crucial piece of equipment in the band\u2019s guitar rigs is the Fender Hot Rod Deville amplifier. Remember, when The Strokes emerged from New York City with <em>Is This It<\/em> in 2001, many claimed Julian Casablancas and his childhood friends were saving rock and roll. (&#8220;That\u2019s f***ing ridiculous,&#8221; Casablancas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/pop-music\/charli-xcx-and-the-strokes-are-sort-of-making-rock-music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> at the time.) But these unkempt saviors didn\u2019t arrive with vintage or expensive boutique gear. And you can still find these amps all day long on the used market for less than $500. What\u2019s much harder to achieve?
