Whether it’s the result of nothing better to do or using the sneakers as symbolism, you can easily tie your shoe laces together and launch them up. It’s a human impulse that has been done time and time again. As Keith Urban pointed out, it’s hard not to imagine someone walking away barefoot immediately after.

In 2024, Keith Urban released the song “CHUCK TAYLORS.” The song’s lyrics were written by Chase McGill, using this rural imagery of shoes hanging from a power line.

The Meaning Behind The Lyrics

In 2025, Keith Urban spoke with Genius about how the song was written. Initially, Urban had a melody that he didn’t have lyrics to. On the other hand, famous Nashville songwriter Chase McGill had lyrics that needed music. The two ideas blended, and out came “CHUCK TAYLORS.”

“We were holding hands, barefoot in the grass / With the red sunset still warm on our backs”

Urban mentions how the opening lines “set up a kind of innocence. There’s a timelessness about it. It’s not really of a time, it’s not really of a place, it’s just innocence. Chase is very poetic; he’s got a great way of painting a feeling in his lyrics.”

“The sky looked like an ocean, and the water looked like glass / And forever meant tomorrow, we both wondered if we could last”

About these lines, Urban talked about how the little town that the protagonist lives in is probably not anywhere near an ocean. “It’s probably near a lake,” laughed Urban. He recalled the feeling of coming from a place like that, and tomorrow truly feeling like forever.

“But you were leavin’, I didn’t wanna face it / Love just doesn’t grow in two different places / Us burnin’ out, I couldn’t take it / So we tied a double knot in those faded white laces”

The lyrics use the shoes as symbolism for a relationship in a way that brings the listener into the protagonist’s small-town world. To the place where they marked a spot with the shoes, leaving their feelings hanging from the power line above.

Keith Urban Released “CHUCK TAYLORS” on His 2024 Album ‘HIGH’

In 2025, the album was nominated for Best Country Album at the ARIA Music Awards. In Keith Urban’s home country of Australia, the album hit No. 1 on the Australian Country Albums chart.
