His band had released its self-titled 1994 debut (colloquially known as the Blue Album), a masterpiece, but the singer had grown bored with rock and roll. So he enrolled at Harvard.

Fast-forward two years, and Weezer followed the Blue Album with a second masterpiece called Pinkerton. Although most didn’t realize at the time just how good Pinkerton was. In fact, many hated it. (And they were wrong.)

Here, “El Scorcho” is a glimpse into Cuomo’s isolation at school. It’s like they have a kind of superpower over him, he imagines. Smitten by a cellist, he then assumes the posture of a frozen wallflower. He’ll say nothing. Do nothing. In the story, Pinkerton, a U.S. Naval officer, marries a 15-year-old Japanese girl named Cio-Cio-San (“Butterfly”). Also, the quoted material in the verse above was taken by Cuomo from a classmate’s essay.

With Puccini’s opera reference, you can see why Cuomo’s heart stopped.

Alas, he can only admire her from afar.
