It\u2019s a destination anthem that both accepts and challenges nostalgia. And there\u2019s been much nostalgia in the air for 90s Britpop legends like Pulp, Blur, Oasis, and Suede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the title of Pulp\u2019s single was inspired by a pivotal event in British rock history. And depending on one\u2019s view, the event was either <em>biblical<\/em> or it was a dispiriting bust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pulp - Spike Island (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-27a1ugJX8U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spike Island<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1990, The Stone Roses and almost 30,000 fans gathered for a concert at Spike Island. It became a touchstone moment for the Madchester scene. But it also marked the end of a cultural era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Something stopped me dead in my tracks,<br>I was headed for disaster, and then I turned back.<br>I was wrestling with a coat hanger. Can you guess who won?<br>The universe shrugged, shrugged, then<\/em><em>\u205fmoved<\/em><em>\u205fon<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many remember having a near-religious experience on Spike Island, the venue sat within a cluster of chemical factories in Widnes, Cheshire, England. And others recall a poorly organized event, a shoddy sound system, and The Stone Roses\u2019 uninspired performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>It\u2019s<\/em><em>\u205fa guess, no<\/em><em>\u205fidea,<br>It\u2019s a feeling.<br>Not<\/em><em>\u205fa voice in my head,<br>Just a feeling<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the miserable conditions of this baggy Woodstock also made space for something new to emerge. The 1980s had ended. And The Stone Roses, one of the decade\u2019s most important bands, may have been imploding, but all the kids the Roses inspired were writing songs, rehearsing, and planning gigs of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A teenage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/liam-gallagher-opens-stone-roses-meant-much-growing-2155913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Liam Gallagher was in the crowd that day<\/a>. Three years later, he and his brother Noel would begin recording the first Oasis album, <em>Definitely Maybe<\/em>. So someone, indeed, thought it was biblical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shouting and Pointing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Jarvis Cocker\u2019s meta pre-chorus, he waves to destiny. Glastonbury, Britpop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/articles\/the-meaning-behind-common-people-by-pulp-and-one-of-britpops-great-anthems\/\">\u201cCommon People\u201d<\/a>, it had to happen. All of it. Destiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I was born to perform,<br>It\u2019s a calling.<br>I exist to do this,<br>Shouting and pointing<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nostalgia is the desire to go home.
