The album was nominated for five Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album, losing out to Green Day\u2019s <em>American Idiot<\/em>. But without what went into it, it wouldn\u2019t be the beloved work it is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scrapped songs\u2028<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Killers - Mr. Brightside (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gGdGFtwCNBE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After listening to The Strokes\u2019 Is This It the day it came out, the band scrapped almost all the songs they had written. \u201cThat record just sounded so perfect,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/stories\/the-killers-debut-album-hot-fuss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frontman Brandon Flowers told NME in 2012<\/a>. The only song they kept was \u201cMr. Brightside,\u201d which proved to be a wise decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cover Photo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The band chose the album\u2019s cover image from a catalog their label presented them, and they liked it because it worked well with their logo. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/matthiasclamer\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=Arg14wt3Vc34wAMkfjiZxsA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The photo was taken by Matthias Clamer<\/a> in a Beijing suburb in 2000, and the signs on the buildings read, &#8220;Construction, Material, Development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Choir<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The songs \u201cAll These Things That I\u2019ve Done\u201d and \u201cAndy You\u2019re A Star\u201d feature a choir called The Sweet Inspirations, who had previously worked with Elvis Presley. Their credits also include working with Van Morrison, the Bee Gees, and\u00a0Jimi Hendrix. They learned their part for \u201cAll These Things That I\u2019ve Done\u201d backstage at SXSW while The Killers were playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Demos\u2028<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the album came from the band\u2019s demos, which they decided to keep. And while most of the recording took place in a studio in California, there was one exception. Closing track \u201cEverything Will Be Alright\u201d was recorded in guitarist Dave Keuning\u2019s Las Vegas home, contributing to its raw sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Vocal Tone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flowers\u2019 sound on the album comes from the default setting on Echo Farm, which was new at the time. The setting overdrives the vocal and creates an 84 ms delay. &#8220;It sort of became the default vocal tone on the whole record,\u201d said Mark Needham, who mixed the album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sales\u2028<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The album was a hit\u2014it topped the UK charts and went to No. 7 in the US. By 2012, it had sold over seven million copies worldwide.
