Perhaps a metaphor for Bridgers as she grapples with life\u2019s death sentence that we all share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Behind the Lyrics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Phoebe Bridgers - As Above (Official Lyric Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b94MzlseGXc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first verse begins with Bridgers on an airplane. Trying to keep calm amid the dense chaos that is flying, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7MJFxnPAjh8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">watches <em>Hot Tub Time Machine<\/em><\/a>, a sci-fi comedy about time travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Trying not to look down,<br>Making faces at a kid on the plane.<br>Trying not to freak out,<br>About being a couple days late.<br>Started watching a movie,<br>One where they go back in time.<br>And it got to me,<br>I don\u2019t know why<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs Above\u201d continues the album\u2019s mortality anxiety. And here is Bridgers with the thirty-thousand-foot view, paraphrasing an ancient maxim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>As above, so below<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vantage point changes from massive heights to a zoomed-in memory of her mother driving herself to the hospital. Then she submits to how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/articles\/the-meaning-behind-bobby-by-phoebe-bridgers-and-the-disorienting-rush-of-falling-in-love\/\">her lover<\/a> will someday take her for granted. It\u2019s okay, really. \u201cLeave it to me, and I\u2019ll make it happen,\u201d she sings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I thought about Air Force One,<br>Flying over Omaha.<br>I thought about my mom,<br>Driving herself to the hospital.<br>I\u2019m always looking for the exit,<br>I\u2019ve never been afraid of heights.<br>Now, I don\u2019t want to live forever,<br>But I don\u2019t wanna die<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You Won\u2019t Have To Believe in Magic<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting of past, present, and future, and time, generally, are recurring themes of <em>Lost Weekend<\/em>. It\u2019s time, place, but also absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are anxious about unknown futures. And we long for parts of the past because what\u2019s behind us is what\u2019s familiar. The rest remains mysterious, uncertain, scary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another reading of the chorus hook may be that death haunts Bridgers everywhere. In the air and on the ground. Her terrestrial proximity won\u2019t change the dark ending we all face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhatever happens after,\u201d she sings, \u201cit doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History is full of people shaping their lives around religious faith, or the thought of conscious stars that care about human affairs.
