It contains all the fury of the 90s zeitgeist with the wryness of her recent album <em>Worst Girl In America<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Behind the Lyrics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hole - Violet\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cH_rfGBwamc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing abstractly, Love sets a dark scene here while foreshadowing Kurt Cobain\u2019s opening lyric in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/nirvana\/heart-shaped-box\">\u201cHeart-Shaped Box\u201d<\/a>, \u201cShe eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, she aims bitterly toward an ex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And the sky was made of amethyst,<br>And all the stars were just like little fish.<br>You should learn when to go,<br>You should learn how to say no<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The painful encounter is short-lived, but the heartbreak lingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Might last a day, yeah,<br>Mine is forever<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a voice that\u2019s slightly resigned, Love suggests a pattern of bad relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>When they get what they want,<br>And they never want it again<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she rages against the emotional and physical toll of dating jerks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Go on, take everything,<br>Take everything, I want you to<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Well, I Told You From the Start<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who know a thing or two about Love\u2019s personal life, many have speculated that \u201cViolet\u201d is about The Smashing Pumpkins\u2019 leader Billy Corgan. In 1995, when Hole performed the song on <em>Later\u2026 With Jools Holland<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SD5WFUbBjsY&amp;t=927s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she introduced it by saying<\/a>: \u201cThis is a song about a jerk. I hexed him, and now he\u2019s losing his hair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And the sky was all violet,<br>I want to give the violent more violence.<br>Yeah, I\u2019m the one with no soul,<br>One above and one below<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in 2024, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/courtney-love-to-auction-handwritten-lyrics-to-holes-violet-for-charity-its-not-just-about-billy-corgan-3812454\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> the <em>NME<\/em> that \u201cIt\u2019s not just about Billy Corgan, as many might assume; it\u2019s about sitting on the fire escape of his flat, sipping cheap wine and taking a Vicodin (oh, to be young!) while the Chicago sun sets, leaving behind a bejeweled amethyst sky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And regarding the bitter curse she mentioned on <em>Later<\/em>, \u201cSometimes I just channel whatever comes. I realize my comment on&nbsp;Jools Holland&nbsp;was a bit mean \u2013 I was just being b**chy beefy.
