In hindsight, it may be a metaphor for the perpetually \u201cuncool\u201d band that was never going to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/led-zeppelin\">Led Zeppelin<\/a> and instead carved its own path through rock history. But he\u2019s not lacking humility as he steadies himself against life\u2019s turbulence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Though his mind is not for rent,<br>Don\u2019t put him down as arrogant.<br>His reserve, a quiet defense,<br>Riding out the day\u2019s events.<br>The river<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTom Sawyer\u201d was initially written by Canadian lyricist and poet Pye Dubois. But Neil Peart transformed the universal free spirit of Dubois\u2019s theme into a more personal narrative about perception and one\u2019s place in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, Peart writes about the character\u2019s lore, but also the larger theme of evolution from child to adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What you say about his company,<br>Is what you say about society.<br>Catch the mist, catch the myth,<br>Catch the mystery, catch the drift<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>He Gets High On You<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later in the song, Lee says Tom Sawyer\u2019s mind isn\u2019t limited to religious or political tribes. He acknowledges human complexity, and remains free of rigid ideologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The world is, the world is,<br>Love and life are deep.<br>Maybe as his eyes are wide.<br><br>Today\u2019s Tom Sawyer, he gets high on you.<br>And the space he invades, he gets by on you<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, he faces the world\u2019s chaos head-on. Amid Rush\u2019s virtuosic arrangement and Peart\u2019s gymnastic drum solos, \u201cTom Sawyer\u201d remains one of the band\u2019s defining songs.
