Barlow sings two songs on the new album, and I\u2019ll point you toward \u201cBlowin\u2019 Up\u201d to hear what a Barlow-fronted Dinosaur Jr. sounds like. But Barlow\u2019s other groups, Sebadoh and The Folk Implosion, are worth exploring for those who are unfamiliar. With Sebadoh, he helped pioneer lo-fi indie rock, recording on cassette machines and releasing heartbreaking classics like \u201cSoul And Fire\u201d. Then there\u2019s The Folk Implosion\u2019s surprise hit, \u201cNatural One\u201d, which appears in the 1995 Larry Clark film, <em>Kids<\/em>. Crank it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ear-Bleeding Country<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"In a Jar\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1av6Xrh2SNE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspired equally by classic rock, punk, and country music, Mascis began writing songs in a new style after high school. He and Barlow had played together in Deep Wound, a hardcore band. But then Mascis slowed the tempos. And he mixed jangly chords with psychedelia in what became Dinosaur Jr.\u2019s style of ear-bleeding country. Blending Neil Young\u2019s fuzzed-out folk, punk\u2019s DIY spirit and the bluesy solos of classic rock, Mascis unwittingly transformed indie rock. Dinosaur Jr. created the blueprint for Nirvana, The Lemonheads, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/kurt-vile\/pretty-pimpin\">Kurt Vile<\/a>, and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>J and the Big Muff<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dinosaur Jr - Feel The Pain\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JXkN3nJyWEA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the credits of Dinosaur Jr.\u2019s first album, Mascis lists both guitar and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Nhl0t5EpNnw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Big Muff<\/a> as his instruments. For non-guitarists, the Big Muff is a distortion pedal made by Electro-Harmonix, first released in 1969. Guitar legends from David Gilmour to Jack White have created their signature sounds using a Big Muff. But Mascis developed his style early on, with both the guitar and the Big Muff in tandem.
