But in 1995, when Garbage released its self-titled debut album, the dance-rock band turned the sound of electronic remixes of popular songs into its North Star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Producers Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker had been busy with high-profile remixes for Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, U2, and others. So they decided to form a band around the remix method. Instead of deconstructing an already finished song, they\u2019d craft tracks with a kind of reverse-engineered approach to songwriting. But first, they needed a singer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pretend You\u2019re Bored<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Garbage - Stupid Girl\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2GhPUAVgHZc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erikson <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qJD21xh9Bto?si=euL6arxFMVUpHy1n&amp;t=173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spotted<\/a> singer Shirley Manson on MTV. She was fronting the Scottish alternative rock band Angelfish. They initially met Manson in London, then invited her to the band\u2019s home in Madison, Wisconsin, for an audition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putting Manson on the spot, they played an instrumental track for her to sing over. Nervous and awkward, she mumbled a few melodies before flying back to the U.K., thinking she blew the audition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cStupid Girl\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vig\u2014who had produced landmark albums for Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Sonic Youth\u2014and the others carried on working on a new idea, that became \u201cStupid Girl\u201d. They started with a sample of The Clash\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/the-clash\/train-in-vain-stand-by-me\">\u201cTrain In Vain\u201d<\/a>. Then asked Marker for a Creedence Clearwater Revival-inspired riff. So Marker reworked CCR\u2019s rendition of \u201cSuzie Q\u201d, and a new song slowly came into focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Manson contacted the band\u2019s manager and asked for another audition. She returned to Vig and Marker\u2019s Smart Studios in Madison, and this time, she sang over the new instrumental the others had created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDon\u2019t believe in fear \/ Don\u2019t believe in faith\u201d, she sang. Everyone in the room sensed that something special was happening. Soon, Manson helped craft the musically contorted yet danceable empowerment anthem. And Garbage, a rock band with a remix sensibility, helped usher in post-grunge by absorbing and then recycling a multitude of musical styles into a single alternative rock alloy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can\u2019t Believe You Fake It<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Manson\u2019s hook didn\u2019t come easy. Her bandmates struggled to soften her Scottish accent. \u201cGirr-ll,\u201d she sang. But they wanted \u201cgirl.\u201d After speaking past one another in the studio, Manson finally understood what they didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No longer lost in translation, \u201cStupid Girl\u201d became a hit.
