It\u2019s the title track of his 1999 album, and it\u2019s the type of grim and gorgeous meditation that has made Oldham\u2019s wobbly tunes feel almost sacred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many, \u201cI See A Darkness\u201d is a way in to Oldham\u2019s sprawling catalog. It also forever connected him to a country-music legend who alchemized the song into an outlaw psalm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can You See What\u2019s Inside of Me?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bonnie &quot;Prince&quot; Billy - I See A Darkness (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4iV4NwSbscg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI See Darkness\u201d begins with a kind of confession from one friend to another. As the conversation continues, the narrator slowly reveals how he sees nothing but despair around him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Many times we\u2019ve been out drinking,<br>And many times we\u2019ve shared our thoughts.<br>But did you ever, ever notice,<br>The kind of thoughts I got?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s not nihilism. He aims for peace and a stop to \u201cour whoring\u201d and hopes to replace the veneer of happiness and the temporary rush of random sex with a more lasting light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Well, you know I have a love,<br>A love for everyone I know.<br>And you know I have a drive,<br>To live, I won\u2019t let go.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Two Types of People and Johnny Cash<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2001, Oldham <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/features\/interview\/5828-will-oldham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> <em>Pitchfork<\/em> about a girl he knew in high school. She said there are two ways to see yourself. There\u2019s the good person who attempts evil and the evil person who tries to do good. \u201cAnd she asked which one I thought,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I think I thought the latter\u2014an essentially evil person who tries to do good in the world. That\u2019s basically what the song is about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But could you see its opposition,<br>Comes rising up sometimes?<br>That its dreadful end position,<br>Comes blacking in my mind.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/johnny-cash\/i-see-a-darkness\">Johnny Cash\u2019s cover<\/a>, many have interpreted its meaning to be about death\u2014a farewell note from the Man in Black, who was nearing the end of his life. Cash\u2019s version appears on his 2000 LP, <em>American III: Solitary Man<\/em>.
