But it wasn\u2019t just the glitching production or the sound of Radiohead as the band entered its post-rock phase. Lyrically, the songs seemed to predict a dystopian future where capitalism, governments, and technology run amok. Or perhaps, the dystopia had already arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, here we are. So let\u2019s revisit three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/radiohead\/paranoid-android\">anxious<\/a> classics from Radiohead\u2019s prescient masterpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cAirbag\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Airbag\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jNY_wLukVW0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re looking for an anxiety-inducing opening track title, you\u2019ve come to the right place. When you feel a total loss of control, there\u2019s always the safety of a rapidly inflating bag of gas that\u2019s deployed following the collision. Written abstractly, Thom York gets reborn after jackknifing near calamity. It\u2019s surviving the crash, the storm, the chaos. Producer Nigel Godrich directs the band through distorted drums, a stop-and-go bass groove, and celestial guitar layers from Ed O\u2019Brien and Jonny Greenwood. It echoes both the crashing cars and the morning after\u2014the coming to as one removes the bandages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In an interstellar burst,<br>I\u2019m back to save the universe<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cExit Music (For A Film)\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Exit Music (For A Film)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bf01riuiJWA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally written for Baz Luhrmann\u2019s 1996 film adaptation of <em>Romeo And Juliet<\/em>, Yorke wrote a song about two lovers kept apart\u2014so they vow to be together after (or in) death. But the band was also obsessed at the time with Johnny Cash\u2019s live album recorded at Folsom Prison. Cash\u2019s iconic 1968 recording inspired the upfront vocal mix. It sounds like Yorke is in the room with the listener. \u201cWake from your sleep,\u201d he sings. Later, \u201cBreathe, keep breathing. I can\u2019t do this alone.\u201d Utterly gorgeous, heartbreaking, unnerving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>We hope that you choke,<br>That you choke<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cFitter Happier\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fitter Happier\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O4SzvsMFaek?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we became accustomed to the sound of Apple\u2019s virtual assistant Siri, there was the synthesized voice of Macintosh\u2019s Fred. Atop Yorke\u2019s wobbly piano notes, Fred delivers a list of random pronouncements about self-improvement. You can exercise, improve your diet, improve work relationships, drive better in a safer car, avoid the microwave, sleep well, have no more bad dreams, routinely check your credit score, see old friends, stop killing bugs, and avoid childish behaviors.
